New York Magazine’s entertainment news website, Vulture, and video artist Alex Coulombe have joined forces to create a trailer in anticipation of Marvel Comics’ next “Spider-Gwen” issue.
Inspired by the comic book series of the same name, the “Spider-Gwen” fake movie trailer features clips of beloved screen actress Emma Stone playing the role of Gwen Stacy.
Marvel Comics’ ‘Spider-Gwen’ series shows an alternate universe where character Gwen Stacy is bitten by a radioactive spider and turns into a masked superhero. The first issue of the ‘Spider-Gwen’ comic book series was published in Feb. 2015.
Published to YouTube on Monday, the video had garnered nearly 600,000 views by Wednesday morning — and dozens of people have commented that they hope someone produces an actual film on the character in the near future.
The pitch for the “Spider-Gwen” fake trailer came from New York Magazine editor Abraham Riesman. Riesman then notified Coulombe about his idea, based on the director’s past video work for a comedy video website called Slacktory.
The director and editor went into preparation mode by reading volume 1 of the “Spider-Gwen” comic book series and watching “Easy A” a handful of times, he told the Daily News.
“There were a lot of things from the comic book series that I initially toyed with,” Coulombe said.
He was especially drawn to the dynamic between Gwen Stacy and her father, Captain Stacy, played by “Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll” creator and actorDenis Leary.
For the trailer, Coulombe edited narration and scenes from other movies featuring Emma Stone — such as “Easy A,” “The Amazing Spider-Man,” “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” and “Birdman.” He also added music from the CW television series, “The Flash,” green screen special effects, and actors performing as costume players, or cosplayers.
The video took nearly three months to complete, as the idea was pitched in July of 2015, filmed in August and finished mid-September in the same year.
New York Magazine wanted the release of the trailer to coincide with the latest comic book issue of “Spider-Gwen.”
When asked if he expected his trailer to gain as much traction on the Internet as it did, Coulombe had no doubts.
“I knew that something big was going to happen,” he said.
For actress Julianne Cancalosi — playing the character of Gwen Stacy in the fake movie trailer as a stand-in — she found the experience of performing in Coulombe’s video “inspiring.”
She loved the idea of an alternative comic universe where Gwen Stacy — not the Peter Parker character — is bitten by a radioactive spider and turned into a superhero. She also feels the heroine is a good role model for female comic book readers to admire.
Cancalosi also created the “Spider-Gwen” costume she is seen wearing in the trailer, and made it in about three weeks.
Coulombe received scores of positive feedback for his “Spider-Gwen” viral video — especially from commenters on Twitter and the creators of the Spider-Gwen character— artist Robbi Rodriguez and writer Jason Latour.
“Great work all around,” Rodriguez said.
“Really flattering that people put so much time and effort into something like this,” Latour said.
Coulombe’s trailer was so well done that some viewers thought a “Spider-Gwen” movie was actually coming to theatres on the date shown during its playback — June 6, 2016.
On the other hand, there are also people who do not believe in female superheroes or support the idea of “Spider-Gwen,” added Coulombe.
For both Cancalosi and Coulombe, Emma Stone would be the best actress to portray “Spider-Gwen” onscreen, should Hollywood take serious notice of its feature film potential.
“In terms of continuity and personal preference, Emma Stone would be a great choice,” Cancalosi told The News.
“Definitely Emma Stone,” added Coulombe. “She has the wit and the charisma.”
But now it’s up to Hollywood to decide.
