A four-time Best Blues winner at the San Diego Blues Awards, Robin Henkel most often works as a one-man band, singing with gusto and playing up a storm on his vintage National Steel guitar. He’s also a longtime musical partner of vocal dynamo Whitney Shay, a fellow San Diego Music Awards winner. In between, he leads the simply named Robin Henkel Band with Horns. Anchored by veteran Fattburger drummer Kevin Koch, this brassy ensemble enables Henkel to write fully arranged songs that are tight and crisp but still leave room for jazzy solos within a template that draws equally from blues, funk and rock. The band will celebrate the release of its spunky debut album with a Friday concert at the all-ages Dizzy’s. The lineup teams Henkel with Steve Ebner on trumpet and Flugelhorn, Dave Castel de Oro on clarinet and tenor sax, Troy Jennings on baritone sax, Jodie Hill on bass and Koch on drums. On stage, expect them to propel the songs from their album to an even higher plane. Robin Henkel Band with Horns CD release concert: 8 p.m. Friday. Dizzy’s, Arias Hall (behind the Musician’s Association building), 1717 Morena Blvd., Bay Park. $20. (858) 270-7467 or dizzysjazz.com.
