A MONSTER who tortured and murdered his girlfriend’s 13-month-old son has died in prison.
Evil Andrew Lloyd, 37, was found dead in his cell at maximum security Full Sutton jail, near York.
He was serving a life sentence for inflicting “significant and extreme abuse” on baby Aaron Gilbert.
The toddler, who had 50 separate injuries, died in hospital in May 2005.
Lloyd was discovered by guards who brought medication to his cell, where he was isolating.
He was restricted to his cell for 14-days under Covid-19 regulations.
Lloyd had only just been transferred to Full Sutton from another high security prison.
The killer had been dead for sometime.
No cause of death has been given, but it is not being treated as suspicious.
A Prison Service spokesperson said: “HMP Full Sutton prisoner Andrew Lloyd died in custody on 19 November.
“The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman has been informed.”
Lloyd, from Townhill, Swansea was jailed for life at Swansea Crown Court in October 2006 after admitting the murder.
Aaron was the son of Lloyd’s girlfriend Rebecca Lewis, who became the first Brit to be jailed for familial homicide on the basis that she failed to prevent his death.
Lloyd beat the baby so badly a neighbour said the child “looked like the Elephant Man”.
A senior nurse told Swansea Crown Court that when little Aaron Gilbert was fighting for life in an emergency room Lloyd was outside “grinning and laughing”.
Doctors found 50 separate injuries on Aaron’s body including a bite mark to the face and a serious skull fracture.
The jury has been told Lloyd swung baby Aaron around by the ankles as the toddler screamed and cried then said “this will toughen him up”.
Aaron died from “blunt force injuries to his head”.
When the trial began Lloyd denied murder and Aaron’s mother Rebecca Louise Lewis, 21, denied the relatively new charge of familial homicide – but later changed his plea to guilty.
Opening the case, Paul Lewis QC, alleged that Lloyd systematically abused Aaron over a number of weeks.
Aaron died at a time Lloyd was living with Lewis after the break-up of her relationship with the child’s father.
Neighbour Rebecca Thrussell told the court she saw the infant on May 3, 2005, and was horrified to see the massive swelling of Aaron’s head and half his face covered by bruising.
She later described him as looking like the Elephant Man.
Lewis’s cousin Sharon Hurlow also made two anonymous calls to Swansea social services, who wrote to Lewis asking her to attend an appointment for the very day he was rushed to hospital.
But the letter was sent to the wrong address.
Aaron was taken to Singleton Hospital, Swansea, on May 5 2005 and then transferred to the University of Wales Hospital, Cardiff.
The following day a brain-stem test showed no sign of activity and Aaron was declared dead.
Rebecca Price, a senior nurse at Singleton Hospital said that when Aaron was brought to the hospital both Lloyd and Lewis were extremely upset.
She added, however, that as relatives of Aaron began to arrive Lloyd’s behaviour became more “defensive”.
Rebecca said: “As he walked along the corridor at one point he was grinning and laughing outside the resuscitation room where Aaron was.”
Consultant pediatrician Dr Hywel Williams said he had “no doubt” the child had suffered extensive abuse.
Dr Williams was called in to examine Aaron after his death.

Asked by prosecutor Mr Lewis for his thoughts, he said: “My immediate and inescapable conclusion was the child had been subjected to severe and extensive abuse.”
Lloyd appealed his 24-year sentence and lost. He was due to stay in prison until 2031.
Aaron’s mother Rebecca Lewis was jailed for seven years.
