She was the prison boss who fell for a 6ft 9in jailbird monster under her care as she helped him to escape and then flee from police but ultimately led to her death.
Vicky White put together a sophisticated plan to break out Casey Cole White which included stockpiling guns for a police shootout – but also a visit to sex shops ahead of a new life with her doomed lover.
The pair – who were not related – have been described as the modern day Bonnie and Clyde .
Vicky, 56, formerly second in command at Alabama’s Lauderdale County Jail, fell head over heels for the 38-year-old white supremacist who was serving a 75-year sentence for a string of crimes including attempted murder, robbery and burglary.
He was also facing a charge of murder over the stabbing of a 58-year-old woman in 2015.
The pair are said to have been in a “jailhouse romance” for around two years. Vicky’s estranged husband had died of Parkinson's in January and they had no children together.
Since their 2020 meeting, Vicky had regularly been driving the two hours to where Casey was incarcerated at a correctional facility.
The couple went on the run on April 29 after love-struck Vicky helped him escape the William E Donaldson Correctional Facility where he was being held.
Their dramatic escape came on the eve of Vicky's retirement as a correctional officer.
After she and Casey fled, it emerged that nine days previously she had sold her £200,000 home for just £77,000.
Using the alias of April Davis or Renee Marie Maxwell, she bought a brown Ford – and other essentials.
She also visited a retailer specialising in clothes for tall men plus Sugar and Spice, a sex-themed shop where she bought lingerie and, the owners hinted, a selection of bedroom toys.
During their two week long escape Dale Bryant, a lawyer who had defended Cole White in the past, had revealed his fears to local news site alabama.com about how the situation would end.
He said that while Cole White is "an alright guy,'' when he's on his proper medication, but when he's off his medication, he could be dangerously unpredictable.
He said: "He usually self-medicates through drugs, usually methamphetamine, and that's when things become a problem.''
Police finally caught up with the couple who were tracked down to a motel in Evansville, Indiana, 11 days after Vicky had told colleagues she was taking the brute for a mental health check-up .
Instead of surrendering to approaching officers, the pair attempted to escape in their car but were rammed by police into a ditch.
As 6ft 9ins White, gave into police Vicky shot herself in the head and died later of her injuries.
It later emerged that the couple were planning a last shoot out with police as a number of guns were recovered from the getaway car.
Vanderburgh County Sheriff Dave Wedding revealed that if they had not been rammed off the road the day could have ended with more bloodshed.
When the couple's hideout was searched, investigators found four semi-automatic handguns, an AR-15 assault rifle and a vast cache of ammunition.
They also found numerous wigs and about $29,000 in cash,
He told reporters: "We later found out that [if they hadn't rammed the vehicle], the fugitive was going to engage in a shootout with law enforcement.
"That action may have saved many of my deputies and fellow law enforcement officers' lives."
Casey White, who is now back behind bars, will now also face an escape charge.
He was seen handcuffed and shackled leaving the jail in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, about 65 miles west of Huntsville, in late April.
At the time, the corrections officer was believed to be transporting him to the courthouse for a mental evaluation.
Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton told reporters that members of the local law enforcement community were in disbelief after her death.
"It's been an emotional rollercoaster," he said. "Vicky to some of these young guys down there she was like a mother figure to them. Never any indication she would pull a stunt like this."
Sheriff Singleton told reporters that he spoke to Vicky's mother and she knew nothing of her daughter’s secret love.
He said: “She's obviously distraught. They loved her daughter and this was a side of their daughter they didn't know.”
