(CNN) Recent revelations about the political activism Virginia "Ginni" Thomas, wife of Justice Clarence Thomas , have renewed scrutiny about how the Supreme Court approaches questions of potential conflicts of interest with the cases that the justices are reviewing. Supreme Court justices make their own determination as to whether they have a personal or financial conflict that would require them to recuse from a case before them. Thomas' refusal to recuse in various cases linked to causes for which his wife has advocated has prompted criticism from court ethical experts and his critics on the left. His defenders, however, argue that Ginni Thomas, who runs a political consulting firm, has a right to political speech and that none of her conduct amounts to the types of ethical issues that would require recusal. Ginni Thomas' views about the House January 6 committee -- and her connections to some of the figures being examined by that probe and by the Justice Department -- has … [Read more...] about Ginni Thomas’ political activism brings scrutiny to Justice Clarence Thomas and the Supreme Court’s recusal rules

Rishi Sunak blasted for using ‘Computer Says No’ excuse to cut benefits for millions
Rishi Sunak was branded the ‘Computer Says No’ Chancellor today after he blamed IT “problems” for a real-terms benefit cut to millions. The out-of-touch Tory admitted “it sounds like an excuse” as he rejected pleas to help families who are plunging into poverty. Speaking to the Mirror, experts dismissed the Chancellor’s claim that computer problems left him unable to act - because Universal Credit can be changed quickly. IFS director Paul Johnson told us: “That doesn’t seem to be any kind of reason for saying ‘we will do nothing because we can’t do everything’.” And Labour deputy leader Angela Rayner tweeted: “Computer said no? He’s insulting your intelligence.” Benefits rose by 3.1% in April, based on six-month-old inflation figures. Yet inflation has already hit 7% and could top 10% by the end of the year. Rishi Sunak’s fall from grace and replacement odds as inflation soars to 9%
Chancellor Rishi Sunak was briefly tipped as a rising star in British politics, but his fall from grace appears to have been quick after a Partygate fine and controversy surrounding his wife's taxes. The odds have shortened on him being replaced in the role, despite being the favourite to replace current under-fire Prime Minister Boris Johnson only a few months ago. Former Labour leader Ed Miliband ripped into the Chancellor in the House of Commons and said his reputation has "crashed like cryptocurrency", while Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves said Labour would abolish the non-dom tax loopholes. Miliband criticised Sunak's handling of the cost of living crisis and called on the government to introduce a windfall tax on oil companies, voted down by Tory MPs . Oil companies have made record profits while energy bills for hard-working Brits have gone up by £693 a year for the average household. Petrol prices at the pumps have also reached record highs in recent … [Read more...] about Rishi Sunak’s fall from grace and replacement odds as inflation soars to 9%
Ex-ICE officials push back on Mayorkas claim that illegal immigrants will be deported ‘promptly’
close Video Mayorkas claims Biden administration is successfully handling border crisis National correspondent Bryan Llenas has the details from Eagle Pass, Texas, on 'Special Report.' NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles! Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has repeatedly claimed that illegal immigrants whose asylum claims fail will be removed "promptly" from the United States – but former Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials are pushing back, saying that there is little chance of that happening given the mass release of illegal immigrants into the U.S. and the current policies of the administration. "If they’re on the border, and they don't claim asylum they can be removed right there, but if they claim asylum, and they are released into the United States, they are not promptly removed," former acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director Thomas Homan told Fox News Digital in an interview this month. … [Read more...] about Ex-ICE officials push back on Mayorkas claim that illegal immigrants will be deported ‘promptly’
