In case you missed it yesterday, Fox Sports signed Tom Brady to a $375 million deal — more money than he’s earned in salary over the course of his entire playing career — to be their lead color commentator for NFL games when he retires in, oh, let’s call it 2047. Why Fox elected to pay Brady this much money isn’t all that hard to discern. He’s the most famous football player in history, and Fox wants a name-brand guy to occupy the booth both for the internal prestige and because Joe Buck and Troy Aikman have left that network to ply their trade over at ESPN. Unlike Tony Romo, Brady will not be entertaining in the booth. Or insightful. Or excited. Or even alive, really. What he WILL be is meticulous about withholding his candor, which is of course what we all love from someone paid to give us a candid look into the sport. Tom Brady is a strategically dull man, forever drawing inspiration from the lobotomized. He can’t even make kissing his own son on the mouth all THAT … [Read more...] about 42 things Tom Brady is guaranteed to say as a Fox Sports analyst

Champions League final: Liverpool and Real Madrid clash to be shown free by BT Sport
All three UEFA finals including the Champions League showdown between Liverpool and Real Madrid will be available to watch for free, BT Sport have confirmed. The broadcaster will stream the club game’s biggest fixture on its website and on YouTube channels on May 28 having unlocked the showpiece in previous seasons. Last year’s final, in which Chelsea defeated Manchester City , drew an audience of 8.7million viewers, while the 2019 game between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur three years ago had 11.3million. By comparison the station often fails to break an audience of 1m for Premier League fixtures. Next Wednesday’s Europa League final between Rangers and Eintracht Frankfurt in Seville and the inaugural Conference League decider on May 25, which sees Jose Mourinho ’s Roma face Feyenoord, will also be shown. Station chief Jamie Hindhaugh said: “It has been another hugely entertaining season of football across all three UEFA club competitions, highlighted by … [Read more...] about Champions League final: Liverpool and Real Madrid clash to be shown free by BT Sport
At 74, Maye Musk — yes, Elon’s mom — becomes oldest Sports Illustrated swimsuit model
Maye Musk wants all women to feel confident in their swimwear. The longtime model — and mother of Tesla and SpaceX Chief Executive Elon Musk — just made history on the cover of Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit edition. At age 74, she’s the oldest woman to grace the cover of the magazine’s annual issue — and she has a message for women everywhere. “When women go to the beach, we’re kind of shy about our bodies, but men will walk around, looking terrible, and they don’t care,” she told People. “I think we have to not care that much!” Musk herself is no stranger to the bright lights. She first began modeling at age 15 while living in South Africa, later coming in as a finalist for the 1969 Miss South Africa beauty competition. However, her profile skyrocketed in recent years after she posed nude for Time magazine’s health issue in 2011. Soon after, she became Covergirl’s oldest spokesmodel at age 69 and also appeared in Beyoncé's “Haunted” music video at age 65. “I didn’t … [Read more...] about At 74, Maye Musk — yes, Elon’s mom — becomes oldest Sports Illustrated swimsuit model

Brown hits go-ahead HR in 8th, A’s take 4 of 5 from Tigers
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 DETROIT (AP) — Seth Brown hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the eighth inning and the Oakland Athletics beat the Detroit Tigers 5-3 on Thursday. Michael Fulmer (1-2) got the first two outs of the eighth, but Jed Lowrie drew a walk and Brown homered to right on a 92-mph fastball. The Tigers have lost nine of 10. “I felt my top hand was leaking out on my first couple at-bats,” said Brown, who had gone 0 for 3 with a strikeout before the homer. “I just wanted to keep everything tight and try to put a good swing on something.” Oakland came to Comerica Park this week with a nine-game losing streak, but won four times in an unusual five-game series. The Athletics' only loss came when they were the official home team in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader — a game they were originally supposed to host before the season's first series was postponed by the lockout. … [Read more...] about Brown hits go-ahead HR in 8th, A’s take 4 of 5 from Tigers
Traded back and forth, Ford learns to live out of suitcase
NEW YORK (AP) — Mike Ford has learned to travel light — and quickly. Since the start of the season, the 29-year-old first baseman has played for Tacoma, San Francisco and Sacramento. Traded from Seattle to the Giants on April 30, he was dealt back to the Mariners on Thursday. On Friday night, he found his way to Citi Field, batting seventh for the Mariners as the designated hitter in a series opener at the New York Mets. “Down to one bag I'm traveling with, and that's just about it,” the 29-year-old first baseman said. "Five dress shirts, two pairs of pants and some shorts and T-shirts. So very simple packing at this point. Makes it a little easier. Plus, you don’t have to pay $150 for the third bag every time." Ford was a rare left-handed bat on the New York Yankees from 2019-21, hitting 17 homers with 41 RBIs in 101 games. His travels began last June 17, when he was traded to Tampa Bay and optioned to Triple-A Durham. Washington claimed him off waivers on Aug. 23 and … [Read more...] about Traded back and forth, Ford learns to live out of suitcase
LEADING OFF: Canó joins Padres, Kershaw out, Kirby back home
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 A look at what's happening around the majors on Saturday: ___ 2B OR NOT 2B Robinson Canó has found another job in the majors, signing with San Diego less than a week after being released by the Mets. The Padres plan to use the 39-year-old Canó as a left-handed bat off the bench. Acting manager Ryan Christenson said he could get some occasional starts at second base and designated hitter. “I’ve got a lot left in the tank,” Canó said. “I know I can still play this game and just go out on top.” The Mets owe Canó nearly $45 million remaining on his original contract signed with Seattle. He will earn a prorated share of the $700,000 minimum. Canó hit .195 with one home run and three RBIs in 43 plate appearances for the NL East-leading Mets. He sat out last season serving a second suspension for performance-enhancing drugs. The eight-time All-Star second … [Read more...] about LEADING OFF: Canó joins Padres, Kershaw out, Kirby back home
Slingsby’s Aussies aim for SailGP 3-peat, another $1M check
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 The Champagne showers from Team Australia’s Season 2 championship have barely dried and SailGP is already starting another dash for $1 million in cash. The third season of tech tycoon Larry Ellison’s global league begins this weekend on the turquoise waters of Bermuda’s Great Sound. To no one’s surprise, Tom Slingsby’s juggernaut Aussie crew remains the one to beat. Slingsby, an Olympic gold medalist and former America’s Cup champion, has skippered the Flying Roo 50-foot foiling catamaran to the first two championships, each coming with a $1 million winner-take-all prize. The fleet expands this season with new teams from Canada and Switzerland, although Japan — which reached the podium race the first two seasons — has run into financial difficulties and will miss the first three regattas. The number of regattas has increased to 10. The Aussies clearly remain the … [Read more...] about Slingsby’s Aussies aim for SailGP 3-peat, another $1M check
