NEW ORLEANS (AP) — For 17 seasons the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra has been under the musical direction of Carlos Miguel Prieto. That changes this summer when conductor Matthew Kraemer takes the reigns. The orchestra's Board of Trustees recently announced that Kramer will take over in July and make his official introduction to music lovers in mid-September. Kraemer called the appointment an “opportunity of a lifetime.” “I am thrilled. I can't wait to relocate. Summer can't come fast enough," he told The Associated Press. He described the Louisiana Philharmonic as “part of the cultural fabric of New Orleans and Louisiana” and said that he's “grateful for the LPO's trust.” The Louisiana Philharmonic is a musician-owned cooperative created in 1991 after the New Orleans Symphony Orchestra collapsed under debt. It describes itself as the nation’s oldest full-time musician-governed and collaboratively operated orchestra. Dr. Bernard Jaffe, the board president, said the … [Read more...] about Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra gets new music director

Election-denying lawmakers hold key election oversight roles
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 7 HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Republican lawmakers who have spread election conspiracy theories and falsely claimed that the 2020 presidential outcome was rigged are overseeing legislative committees charged with setting election policy in two major political battleground states. Divided government in Pennsylvania and Arizona means that any voting restrictions those GOP legislators propose is likely to fail. Even so, the high-profile appointments give the lawmakers a platform to cast further doubt on the integrity of elections in states that will be pivotal in selecting the next president in 2024. Awarding such plum positions to lawmakers who have repeated conspiracies and spread misinformation cuts against more than two years of evidence showing there were no widespread problems or fraud in the last presidential election. It also would appear to run counter to the … [Read more...] about Election-denying lawmakers hold key election oversight roles
Ukraine: ‘Fast-track’ talks underway for missiles, planes
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 7 KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine and its Western allies are engaged in “fast-track” talks on the possibility of equipping the invaded country with long-range missiles and military aircraft, a top Ukrainian presidential aide said Saturday. Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said Ukraine’s supporters in the West “understand how the war is developing” and the need to supply planes capable of providing cover for the armored fighting vehicles that the United States and Germany pledged at the beginning of the month. However, in remarks to online video channel Freedom, Podolyak said that some of Ukraine's Western partners maintain a “conservative” attitude to arms deliveries, “due to fear of changes in the international architecture.” Russia and North Korea have accused the West of prolonging and taking a direct role in the war by … [Read more...] about Ukraine: ‘Fast-track’ talks underway for missiles, planes
Mass shootings lead to widening divide on state gun policies
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 14 JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Mass shootings have commanded public attention on a disturbingly frequent basis across the U.S. But rather than provoking a unified response from elected officials, each additional shooting seems to be widening the political divide on gun policy among states. “It’s wash, rinse and repeat with these mass shootings,” said Michael Anderson, a bartender who survived a mass shooting at a Colorado nightclub. “They happen, and then they happen, and then they happen — and then nothing gets done.” At least nothing that has put a halt to the violence. In Democratic-led states with already restrictive gun laws, officials have responded to home-state tragedies with even more limits on guns — doubling down on a belief that future shootings can be thwarted by controlling access to lethal weapons. In … [Read more...] about Mass shootings lead to widening divide on state gun policies
