Mitch Albom Detroit Free Press Published 12:00 AM EDT Apr 29, 2019 ZIMBABWE — I was in a hotel room here, minutes away from one of the seven natural wonders of the world, when I got the phone call that Judge Damon Keith had died. Only hours earlier, I had stood in the glorious spray of Victoria Falls, the largest waterfall on the planet. It took my breath away. Rarely has a man stood for so much good, for so many others, for so long. He died Sunday morning. For those who knew him, it was a crushing piece of news. Within hours, there were already long tributes to what Judge Keith did as a lawyer, a district judge and a federal judge, his landmark cases on housing and job discrimination that literally changed the nation, the … [Read more...] about Mitch Albom: Judge Damon Keith faced hate but chose love

We’ve all had it happen: You look at your phone and notice a missed call from a familiar-looking number that isn’t in your contacts. Your first instinct might be to call back and see who it was, but that’s the last thing you should do.You might assume calling back is safe because a number happens to be from your area code. Is it your doctor? Your kid’s principal? A neighbor? Unfortunately, the answer is probably none of those, says Adam Levin, founder of CyberScout and author of Swiped: How to Protect Yourself in a World of Scammers, Phishers, and Identity Thieves. Don’t miss these other sneaky ways con artists win your trust. You’d probably ignore an 800 number, but a number that comes from your hometown … [Read more...] about This is why you should never call back an unknown number
Kat Stafford Detroit Free Press Published 8:00 AM EST Jan 24, 2019 Anistia Thomas’ mind raced when she saw the muzzle flash from the AR-15 rifle. Thomas said she watched as her ex-husband, former state Sen. Virgil Smith Jr., a Detroit Democrat who represented the 4th Senate District, raised the rifle and fired. Thomas said she was faced with a split-second decision, as she stood that night of May 10, 2015, on the sidewalk near his house: Run or let fear take hold. She ran. “I went into survivor mode,” Thomas recalled in her first in-depth interview since the incident, clasping her hands tightly in her lap. “When I started seeing the flashing fire from the gun, I felt like there was an angel there protecting me. I said, ‘OK, survivor mode. I need to think fast. I can either get frantic and get scared or I’m going to pony up and get out of here and save my life.’ ” More: Case against ex-lawmaker Virgil Smith revived … [Read more...] about Ex-wife of former state Sen.
