National University to become Sanford National University

South Dakota billionaire philanthropist T. Denny Sanford will have San Diego-based National University renamed in his honor.Sanford and the university announced Tuesday the school will be renamed Sanford National University. A formal launch is planned next July.Forbes reports Sanford has pledged $350 million to National University. The private, nonprofit school plans to dedicate the money to lowering the cost of college education for working adults, among other goals.Started in 1971, National University offers both online and campus-based programs for adult learners, and has about 28,000 students. Falwell settles lawsuit over Florida real estate venture

Jerry Falwell Jr. has settled a federal lawsuit involving a Florida real estate venture.The Miami Herald reports that Falwell has agreed to pay Gordon Bello an undisclosed amount of money.Falwell is the president of Liberty University, an evangelical Christian school in Lynchburg, Virginia. Bello is an attorney and legislative aide for the Miami-Dade County Commission.Bello sued in 2017, claiming he was promised a stake in a South Beach hostel that Falwell purchased in 2013 for $4.7 million. Bello claims he and his father, Miami builder Jett Bello, pitched Falwell on the hostel idea after being introduced by a high school friend of the younger Bello. Falwell denies promising Gordon Bello anything. MIT reviews partnerships with blacklisted Chinese tech firms

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is reviewing relationships with Chinese artificial intelligence companies hit with a U.S. export ban.The U.S. Commerce Department this week blacklisted 28 Chinese organizations, including AI firms SenseTime and iFlytek which have research partnerships with MIT.The Trump administration says the organizations have been implicated in the repression of China’s Muslim minority.MIT spokeswoman Kimberly Allen says the university pays careful attention to export controls and will modify its interactions with the companies as necessary. The MIT-SenseTime Alliance on Artificial Intelligence funds multiple research projects. Voice recognition company iFlytek last year announced a 5-year partnership with MIT’s AI researchers.SenseTime spokeswoman June Jin says its partnerships are driven by the spirit of learning.
