South Dakota billionaire philanthropist T. Denny Sanford will have San Diego-based National University renamed in his honor.Sanford and the university announced Tuesday the school will be renamed Sanford National University. A formal launch is planned next July.Forbes reports Sanford has pledged $350 million to National University. The private, nonprofit school plans to dedicate the money to lowering the cost of college education for working adults, among other goals.Started in 1971, National University offers both online and campus-based programs for adult learners, and has about 28,000 students. A new South Korean law will bar citizens with a record of domestic violence from marrying immigrants, following recent uproar over a Korean man brutally beating his Vietnamese wife. The country’s Justice Ministry said in a legislative notice published Thursday that the new amendment to South Korea’s Immigration Control Law is expected to take effect in a year. The new provision will ban a South Korean citizen with a record of domestic violence, irrespective of when it took place, from inviting foreigners to the country for marriage. The ministry said the new move was prompted by the instance of domestic violence involving a Vietnamese housewife that happened in July. Thousands of people prepared to descend on Paris on Sunday (Oct 6) to protest a government plan to let single women and lesbians become pregnant with fertility treatments, the first major social reform since France legalised gay marriage in 2013. The California Court of Appeal recently clarified the wage rights of the thousands of personal attendants working in California households.The FactsOn April 1, 2014, Lea Liday quit her job as the live-in caregiver for the two autistic sons of Drs. Peter Sim and Loraine Diego. Liday received a monthly salary of $3,000. There was no agreement about how many hours that salary covered or on the hourly rate the salary contemplated.Liday worked around-the-clock seven days a week, except for the six hours each weekday when the boys were in school. Liday slept in the severely autistic older boy’s room to be available when his sleeping irregularities caused him to wake up at night. She took a total of 14 weekends off from April 1, 2010 through December 31, 2013. Liday claimed her salary did not compensate her for all the hours she worked.
