Scott Davis, provided by Published 4:26 pm CST, Friday, January 4, 2019 Green Bay Packers tight end Marcedes Lewis said Aaron Rodgers would ignore former head coach Mike McCarthy's play calls in the huddle. Lewis told a story about Rodgers getting a play call from McCarthy, saying no, then telling his teammates what to do. Previous reports indicated that Rodgers and McCarthy battled over play-calling, with McCarthy struggling to get some plays run all game. Things reached a new level in 2018, and amid team struggles, McCarthy was fired. Things between Aaron Rodgers and former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy apparently got so bad that Rodgers was simply ignoring play-calls. Packers tight end Marcedes Lewis said on Yahoo Sports and Complex's "Mostly Football" that he first became aware that Rodgers and McCarthy were not on the same page during a huddle early in the season. According to Lewis, Rodgers received the play call through the headset, but chose to run … [Read more...] about Packers tight end says Aaron Rodgers would ignore Mike McCarthy’s play calls and choose his own plays

Associated Press Published 10:59 PM EST Nov 11, 2018 Los Angeles — The Los Angeles Rams were still reeling from the mass shooting less than five miles from their training complex when wildfires consumed the nearby hills, forcing a canceled practice and the evacuation of many players and coaches from their homes. At the close of a horrific week in Thousand Oaks, a comeback victory over the Seattle Seahawks somehow seemed both more trivial and even sweeter to these resilient Rams. Brandin Cooks rushed for a 9-yard touchdown with 5:49 to play on the first snap after Dante Fowler forced and recovered a fumble by Russell Wilson, and the Rams bounced back from their first loss of the season with a 36-31 victory Sunday. Jared Goff was forced from his home during the week, but he passed for 318 yards and two touchdowns as the Rams (9-1) swept the season series with their division rivals. “It’s just been a tough week for the whole city, the whole area up … [Read more...] about Sunday’s NFL: Los Angeles Rams clip Seattle Seahawks to cap ‘tough week’
Dave Birkett Detroit Free Press Published 7:03 PM EST Nov 8, 2018 The Stat King has a message for his latest critic: Your opinion is none of my concern. Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford responded to criticism lobbed his way this week by former NFL MVP and CBS Sports analyst Rich Gannon, who called him “overpaid” and said he piles up big passing numbers late in games. “I don’t need to answer to Rich Gannon,” Stafford said Thursday. Gannon said on the show NFL Monday QB that Stafford’s early game struggles are “a big reason why” the Lions are 3-5 and in last place in the NFC North entering Sunday’s showdown with the Chicago Bears. The Lions have fallen behind by double digits in the first half of each of their last two games and in four of their five losses this year. Stafford has nine turnovers in those losses, and just one in the Lions’ three wins. “The guy is overpaid,” Gannon said. … [Read more...] about Detroit Lions’ Matthew Stafford: I don’t answer to Rich Gannon
Justin Rogers The Detroit News Published 12:02 PM EST Nov 8, 2018 It's Thursday and therefore Detroit Lions mailbag day. When the Lions extended Sam Martin's contract in 2016, he was one of the best punters in the game. He finished fourth in the NFL in net average the previous season and rewarded the team's faith in him with the second-best net average in NFL history the following year. No one could have expected what happened in 2017, a freak foot injury suffered while on vacation. You just deal with those things as they come along, but that was the key culprit to last year's disappointing performance. This season, Martin has bounced back. He's not threatening franchise records, but his 45.4-yard average indicates the leg strength is close to normal. The net is a disaster, and some of that is his fault due to a few mishits, but it's more on shoddy work from the coverage units. Financially, Martin's contract extension didn't kick in until 2017 and … [Read more...] about Detroit Lions mailbag: Potential cap casualties, move on from Sam Martin?
Matt Schoch Special to The Detroit News Published 12:25 PM EST Nov 7, 2018 Allen Park — Andrew Donnal remembers the last time he wanted to feel bigger than his little brother. Posing for team pictures as a senior with the Anthony Wayne High School basketball team in Monclova, Ohio, Donnal said he stood on tip-toes next to his freshman brother to skew the historical record a little. “That’s the last time I think I was officially taller than my brother,” said Donnal, who at 6-foot-6 still is no slouch there. “But in the little time we got to play together, it was really fun. We competed against each other our whole lives, the driveway or whatever … who can eat the most at dinner. But when we’re playing together, trying to accomplish the same goal, that’s even more fun for me.” His brother, Mark, has added a few inches to his height since then, but the siblings have grown to be part of major sports environments: Andrew as an … [Read more...] about Donnal brothers had tall expectations from the beginning
