Dave Birkett Detroit Free Press Published 10:10 PM EDT Apr 26, 2019 I didn't know a thing about Jahlani Tavai before the Detroit Lions took him with the 43rd overall pick of the 2019 NFL draft Friday, and judging by the reaction on Twitter, not many fans did, either. So after the Lions made Tavai the surprise pick of the second round, I reached out to a couple of talent evaluators I trust to get their opinions on the Hawaii linebacker. As it turns out, maybe Tavai wasn't that big of a surprise after all. One scout with an AFC team said he had Tavai graded as a clear Day 3 pick, while another with an NFC team said the Lions took Tavai "a little early" for his taste. But the general feedback I got from the four scouts I surveyed was positive, with one saying he did not think Tavai would have made it to Day 3 — and might not have made it to the third round — had the Lions not grabbed him when they did. Tavai was a tackling machine at Hawaii, where he … [Read more...] about What NFL insiders are saying about Detroit Lions’ LB Jahlani Tavai

Whether you're a big Detroit Lions fan, or root for some other team, here's all you need to know. Preview First, we look ahead to Friday night's Rounds 2 and 3. As of Friday morning, the Lions hold the 43rd and 88th overall selections. But who will they take. Dave Birkett has a few ideas. Who is Hockenson? On Thursday, the Lions selected Iowa tight end T.J. Hockenson. The comparisons to former Lions tight end Eric Ebron, whom the team took with the 10th overall pick in the 2014 draft, will be prevalent. What Lions GM Bob Quinn said: Hockenson checked every box Our writers all chimed in on the pick. Even our readers shared their thoughts on social media. Dave Birkett: Hockenson isn't Rob Gronkowski, but he's right for Lions Shawn Windsor: Don't let the past scare you: Lions made right call with Hockenson … [Read more...] about NFL draft: All you need to know about Detroit Lions so far
Dave Birkett Detroit Free Press Published 5:25 PM EST Jan 24, 2019 MOBILE, Ala. — He thought he’d play quarterback, wide receiver or safety, maybe even linebacker, at least that’s what they told him when they offered him his only scholarship, a partial ride. But when 215-pound John Cominsky showed up for the first day of summer camp, the coaches at Division II Charleston gave him a binder that read: John Cominsky, Barberton, D-end. Cominsky’s first reaction, understandably, was, “I’ve got some work to do.” “And then especially when I seen the offensive linemen that first practice,” Cominsky said. “I’m on practice squad, so I’m looking at this offensive line, and we had a really good, big offensive line that year and I’m on practice squad and I’m like, ‘Oh, crap. I’ve got to figure this out.’” Cominsky “got dumped on (his) head” every day for an entire fall … [Read more...] about Detroit Lions: Why small-school DE John Cominsky stands out
Justin Rogers The Detroit News Published 1:02 PM EST Jan 24, 2019 Mobile, Ala. — While not the only factor, the Detroit Lions offense fell off a cliff last season after the team moved wide receiver Golden Tate at the trade deadline. That’s why replacing Tate this offseason must be a top priority for general manager Bob Quinn. Thankfully, the Senior Bowl is chock full of explosive slot receivers who could fill Detroit’s roster hole. In the seven games prior to the Tate trade, Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford posted a 98.5 passer rating, with 14 touchdowns and six interceptions. In the final nine games, the passer rating dipped to 82.7 and his yards per attempt plummeted to 6.18 yards. Tate’s ability to quickly get open from the slot and make tacklers miss in the open field was sorely missed down the stretch. Among the options at the Senior Bowl who could replicate that skill set is South Carolina’s Deebo Samuel, who compared himself to Tate … [Read more...] about Detroit Lions’ Golden Tate replacement could come from Senior Bowl
Carlos Monarrez Detroit Free Press Published 12:26 PM EST Jan 23, 2019 It’s worse than I thought. I thought new Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell was going to be meatloaf. But it turns out general manager Bob Quinn wants him to be an everything bagel. You know. That’s a bagel. With everything. That tastes exactly like nothing. "It’s going to be a little bit of a mix of everything,” Quinn said in a radio interview Monday, “and that’s something what really kind of led us to Darrell in the end.” It’s hard to know exactly what Quinn is saying because he deferred further comment about Bevell to coach Matt Patricia, who declined comment to the Free Press and other Detroit reporters at the Senior Bowl. Maybe Quinn actually means “everything.” Maybe he means some of “everything” sometimes. He might be trying to avoid tipping his hand about a new scheme. But I can tell you this about NFL offenses. … [Read more...] about Detroit Lions want Darrell Bevell to do ‘everything’; can he?
