Dave Birkett Detroit Free Press Published 10:10 PM EDT Apr 26, 2019 I didn't know a thing about Jahlani Tavai before the Detroit Lions took him with the 43rd overall pick of the 2019 NFL draft Friday, and judging by the reaction on Twitter, not many fans did, either. So after the Lions made Tavai the surprise pick of the second round, I reached out to a couple of talent evaluators I trust to get their opinions on the Hawaii linebacker. As it turns out, maybe Tavai wasn't that big of a surprise after all. One scout with an AFC team said he had Tavai graded as a clear Day 3 pick, while another with an NFC team said the Lions took Tavai "a little early" for his taste. But the general feedback I got from the four scouts I surveyed was positive, with one saying he did not think Tavai would have made it to Day 3 — and might not have made it to the third round — had the Lions not grabbed him when they did. Tavai was a tackling machine at Hawaii, where he … [Read more...] about What NFL insiders are saying about Detroit Lions’ LB Jahlani Tavai

Whether you're a big Detroit Lions fan, or root for some other team, here's all you need to know. Preview First, we look ahead to Friday night's Rounds 2 and 3. As of Friday morning, the Lions hold the 43rd and 88th overall selections. But who will they take. Dave Birkett has a few ideas. Who is Hockenson? On Thursday, the Lions selected Iowa tight end T.J. Hockenson. The comparisons to former Lions tight end Eric Ebron, whom the team took with the 10th overall pick in the 2014 draft, will be prevalent. What Lions GM Bob Quinn said: Hockenson checked every box Our writers all chimed in on the pick. Even our readers shared their thoughts on social media. Dave Birkett: Hockenson isn't Rob Gronkowski, but he's right for Lions Shawn Windsor: Don't let the past scare you: Lions made right call with Hockenson … [Read more...] about NFL draft: All you need to know about Detroit Lions so far
Carlos Monarrez Detroit Free Press Published 2:55 PM EST Nov 7, 2018 Detroit Lions coach Matt Patricia stood behind his offensive line and offered the team’s most maligned unit his full-throated support three days after quarterback Matthew Stafford was sacked a career-high 10 times. “I like our offensive line a lot,” Patricia said Wednesday. “These guys work extremely hard. The offensive line is a hard group to play in. … “But I would say our group works extremely hard every single day to get better and I think if you look at the overall picture of what we’re talking about, this group has been one of the groups of our team that has gotten much better in the course of a year. I think we would all agree that this offensive line has gotten a lot better and that’s a positive.” The offensive line has appeared — at times — to improve from last season under offensive line coach Jeff Davidson, who replaced Ron … [Read more...] about Detroit Lions’ Matt Patricia: ‘I like our offensive line a lot’
Dave Birkett Detroit Free Press Published 10:24 AM EST Nov 7, 2018 It’s mailbag time! Every week, Dave Birkett will answer your Detroit Lions questions. Send them via Twitter to @davebirkett or by email to [email protected] How does Bob Quinn justify this season after firing Caldwell for going 9-7 saying that wasn't good enough? Lions won't be even close to that this year with essentially the same talent. – @blok_rich Bob Quinn hasn’t talked publicly since the draft and there are a bunch of questions, new and old, he’ll face when he finally does. Quinn, of course, said in January when he fired Jim Caldwell that he thought the Lions underachieved at 9-7 and were better than their record. Well, they’re on track for more losses now in a season that looks like it will be a step back. There's still eight games left, so who knows if the Lions turn things around. But I suspect Quinn will say this season wasn’t good enough, he’s … [Read more...] about Detroit Lions mailbag: How will Bob Quinn explain this year?
Shawn Windsor Detroit Free Press Published 6:04 AM EST Nov 7, 2018 The Detroit Lions gave up 10 sacks Sunday in Minnesota. For the second week in a row, they looked in over their heads. They are 3-5 staring at 3-7. But enough about the Lions. What about you? Where do you go from here? Where do you turn now that your (relatively) new general manager, your new head coach, your new running back, your revamped offensive line and your new defensive run-stopper all conspired to bring you to the same place you’ve always been when the leaves began to change? Someone has a sick sense of humor. The question is: why? What did you do to deserve this? It can’t just be the Pinto. Or that you aren’t sitting up straight. Yet here we are, a week into November, with the NFL as fun as it has been in years, and the Lions aren’t just losing, they’re boring. Worse than that, no one outside … [Read more...] about Detroit Lions fans: What’d you do to deserve this misery?
