In deep-red corner of Arizona, threat of losing water starts to outweigh fear of regulation

February 4, 2023 by edition.cnn.com Leave a Comment

By Ella Nilsen , CNN Updated 0902 GMT (1702 HKT) February 4, 2023 Kingman, Arizona (CNN) Driving along county roads that are little more than dirt paths, Tim Walsh remarked that the expansive valley below the Long Mountain range used to be no more than tumbleweeds and scraggly cactuses. Now, it's pistachio trees as far as the eye can see. Far from mature, the pistachio saplings are just a few feet tall. The trees were planted for "miles and miles, clear up to the base of the mountain," said Walsh, a lifelong Kingman resident and head of Mohave County's Department of Development Services. Over the past decade, the vast desert area around the 33,000-person city of Kingman has been transformed into an agricultural enclave. Green alfalfa fields were first planted below the mountains, then eventually replaced with thirsty pistachio trees. But as those farms grow, county and city officials fear the groundwater -- their only source of water -- is not capable of supporting … [Read more...] about In deep-red corner of Arizona, threat of losing water starts to outweigh fear of regulation

‘Not going to jump ship’: Here’s how First Republic Bank customers are reacting to its struggles

March 22, 2023 by www.sfchronicle.com Leave a Comment

Wall Street investors are dumping First Republic Bank stock as if it were radioactive. Some of its largest depositors are yanking out their money as if its collapse were imminent. But allegiance remains strong among many in the impressive roster of companies, nonprofits and individuals featured in the San Francisco bank’s marketing campaign, even as they are bombarded with news reports that First Republic is fighting for its existence. Several said the bank proactively contacted them and helped them arrange their funds so they would be covered by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. guarantee, which applies to accounts up to $250,000 each. “I’m fiercely loyal to them,” said Dr. Eduardo Peña Dolhun, a San Francisco family physician and founder of two medical companies, DripDrop and AlphaSperm, who has been banking with First Republic for almost two decades. “They helped me build my entire professional life and have been incredibly supportive through my early years, and my … [Read more...] about ‘Not going to jump ship’: Here’s how First Republic Bank customers are reacting to its struggles

A BABY boy died from a "catastrophic" brain injury after a van hit his pram in a horror smash that also seriously injured his mum, an inquest heard. Louis Thorold was being pushed on the pavement by mum Rachael when two vehicles collided in the road. The crash caused a van to veer into Louis' pram - killing the five-month-old. His mum Rachael was left with life-changing injuries and spent more than 100 days in hospital after the horror in Cambridge in January 2021. Shelagh Robertson, 75, was previously cleared of causing death by careless driving by reason of insanity due to her undiagnosed dementia. March 21, 2023 by www.dailystar.co.uk Leave a Comment

A bloke who lost his hand after a crash on his dune buggy says his fingers looked like "gummy worms" after the accident. Justin Braden, 23, was driving six friends around his rural family property when the vehicle flipped and slid down a hill - crushing his dominant left hand in the process. After being rushed by ambulance to Northwestern Hospital in McHenry, Illinois, doctors told him he would have to have his hand amputated. READ MORE: 'Prankster ghost who pulled girls' hair in toilet convinced me supernatural is real' Justin woke up after the four-hour operation with a “giant looking club” where his hand used to be and realised had to adjust to life without his dominant hand. He was forced to give up his job as a landscape gardener and couldn’t do many of the activities he’d previously taken for granted - including writing, going bowling and even brushing his teeth. The 37-year-old at the heart of the artificial intelligence boom is a little scared, and he wants us to know it. OpenAI CEO and ChatGPT creator Sam Altman granted a lengthy one-on-one interview to ABC News , released last week during its evening news show, in which he discussed the future of his company’s AI tech in lofty terms — “this will be the greatest technology humanity has yet developed” — while emphasizing society’s need to adapt or otherwise ready itself for terrible outcomes. As he praised his company’s product-by-product rollout of chatbot platforms, he said he hopes his firm can make mistakes while the stakes are low and said “people should be happy that we’re a little bit scared of this.” “You’re a little bit scared?” ABC News’ Rebecca Jarvis prodded. “You personally?” “A little bit, yeah, of course,” Altman replied, hitting a key point in his apparent campaign to win the trust of the American public. “I think if I said I were not, you should either not … [Read more...] about OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says he, too, is ‘a little bit scared’ of ChatGPT

MONTEGRANDE MANILA, Philippines — Negros Oriental 3rd District Rep. Arnolfo Teves has sought an audience with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., saying that he might be compelled to return home if the President himself makes such a request. Teves explained in a video posted on his Facebook on Wednesday that Marcos has greater power in the government and is therefore better positioned to keep him safe. Fearing for his and his family’s safety, Teves has delayed returning home even though his travel authorization has expired. His life was in danger allegedly because of his connection to the murder of Roel Degamo, governor of Negros Oriental. “Dapat lahat ng angulo tignan.  Ang nangyari kasi ngayon Mr. President pagkatapos pa lang no’ng murder ako na kaagad ang tinumbok.  So ‘yon lang ang pakiusap ko sir, at sana … [Read more...] about Teves asks for audience with Marcos: If it’s you who’ll ask me to go home, I might do so
