Now, it's pistachio trees as far as the eye can see. Far from mature, the pistachio saplings are just a few feet tall. The trees were planted for "miles and miles, clear up to the base of the mountain," said Walsh, a lifelong Kingman resident and head of Mohave County's Department of Development Services. Over the past decade, the vast desert area around the 33,000-person city of Kingman has been transformed into an agricultural enclave. Green alfalfa fields were first planted below the mountains, then eventually replaced with thirsty pistachio trees. But as those farms grow, county and city officials fear the groundwater -- their only source of water -- is not capable of supporting … [Read more...] about In deep-red corner of Arizona, threat of losing water starts to outweigh fear of regulation

‘Not going to jump ship’: Here’s how First Republic Bank customers are reacting to its struggles
Wall Street investors are dumping First Republic Bank stock as if it were radioactive. Some of its largest depositors are yanking out their money as if its collapse were imminent. But allegiance remains strong among many in the impressive roster of companies, nonprofits and individuals featured in the San Francisco bank’s marketing campaign, even as they are bombarded with news reports that First Republic is fighting for its existence. Several said the bank proactively contacted them and helped them arrange their funds so they would be covered by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. guarantee, which applies to accounts up to $250,000 each. “I’m fiercely loyal to them,” said Dr. Eduardo Peña Dolhun, a San Francisco family physician and founder of two medical companies, DripDrop and AlphaSperm, who has been banking with First Republic for almost two decades. “They helped me build my entire professional life and have been incredibly supportive through my early years, and my … [Read more...] about ‘Not going to jump ship’: Here’s how First Republic Bank customers are reacting to its struggles

The 37-year-old at the heart of the artificial intelligence boom is a little scared, and he wants us to know it. OpenAI CEO and ChatGPT creator Sam Altman granted a lengthy one-on-one interview to ABC News , released last week during its evening news show, in which he discussed the future of his company’s AI tech in lofty terms — “this will be the greatest technology humanity has yet developed” — while emphasizing society’s need to adapt or otherwise ready itself for terrible outcomes. As he praised his company’s product-by-product rollout of chatbot platforms, he said he hopes his firm can make mistakes while the stakes are low and said “people should be happy that we’re a little bit scared of this.” “You’re a little bit scared?” ABC News’ Rebecca Jarvis prodded. “You personally?” “A little bit, yeah, of course,” Altman replied, hitting a key point in his apparent campaign to win the trust of the American public. “I think if I said I were not, you should either not … [Read more...] about OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says he, too, is ‘a little bit scared’ of ChatGPT
