California Gov. Gavin Newsom recently announced the state’s most infamous death row will be shuttered, transforming San Quentin State Prison into a “restorative justice facility” over the next few years. The $20 million plan will change the prison's name to the San Quentin Rehabilitation Center, and Newsom said by 2025, a panel of civilian experts, former inmates and crime victims will help advise on the facility's changes. "We want to be the preeminent restorative justice facility in the world — that's the goal," Newsom said March 17. As part of the shift, the more than 500 inmates who currently live on San Quentin’s death row will be moved to various prisons throughout the state. Newsom imposed an indefinite moratorium on the death penalty in 2019; prisoners sentenced to death are not eligible for parole. 1998-10-12 04:00:00 PDT CALIFORNIA -- A long and bewildering tangle of pretrial maneuvering and litigation is expected to end tomorrow as jurors begin taking their seats for the long-delayed trial of alleged serial killer Charles Ng. Ng, a 37-year-old former U.S. Marine, is accused of killing 12 people during a sex slavery, torture and homicide spree in remote Calaveras County in 1984 and 1985. He was arrested in Canada in 1985 shortly after the killings were discovered, but he fought extradition for six years and has been involved in a series of legal actions that have delayed his trial in California since 1991. Opening arguments could begin as soon as Thursday, according to the state attorney general's office. The trial is being held in Orange County Superior Court, where it was moved from Calaveras County because of pretrial publicity, and testimony alone may take nine months. A farmhouse in the Lake District has opened up its stables for guests to sleep right next to its Friesian horses and Shetland ponies - and pay £350 a night for the privilege. When we say 'next to' we mean it; guests are literally in the stable, with just a divider between them and their new neigh-bour. Stable Stays has converted half of one of its horses' homes but don't worry, it won't be a 'mare as the room has bunk beds, a kitchenette, dining table and ensuite wet room, complete with a 'portable eco-loo'. The horses will be on the other side of the divider, meaning you can climb on the top bunk and feed or groom the horses from there. Here we go again. A low-pressure system from the Gulf of Alaska is forecast to impact the San Francisco Bay Area from Monday through Wednesday, bringing more rain and wind to a region that was battered by a storm less than a week ago. This system is expected to reach peak intensity over the Pacific Ocean off the coast of the California-Oregon border before drifting south along the California coast and passing by the Bay Area. The storm is expected to bring less severe impacts to the region than the last area of low pressure that passed directly over San Francisco, said Rick Canepa, a forecaster with the National Weather Service. The National Weather Service expanded the Monday-Tuesday wind advisory to include the North Bay, East Bay and eastern Santa Clara hills in addition to the coastal areas. An enterprising British expat is hoping to cash in by selling jars of fresh mountain air - for £200 a bottle. John Green, 64, captures the air high up in the pristine Swiss Alps and is planning to ship bottles to buyers who live in smog-filled cities around the world. John, an IT consultant originally from London, said the air is from a "secret" location at an altitude of 10,000ft, and is the "ultimate present for the man or woman that has everything". It may seem like a silly idea but there is a demand for bottled "fresh air" in polluted countries such as China, where the wealthy spend thousands of pounds for just a few seconds of relief.
