Starmer’s ‘radical’ promises have gone as he targets power – but we still don’t really know who he is
Sir Keir Starmer has been on a journey since becoming Labour leader in April 2020. In the race to succeed Jeremy Corbyn, Sir Keir promised to maintain Labour's "radical values" and committed to many Corbyn-era policies. Fast forward three years, and in tone and content, the offer is markedly different. Take this from Sir Keir in his London speech on Saturday: "Our message at the next election must be we are different to the party Britain rejected in 2019." It's probably worth remembering that in 2019 Sir Keir Starmer wasn't some lowly backbencher agitating against Jeremy Corbyn's agenda, he was sat around his shadow cabinet table as Brexit secretary. Nevertheless, Labour officials are equally punchy, saying the speech represents a "clear repudiation of the previous leadership and everything that came with that". I'm also told, in this context, Jeremy Corbyn is unlikely to be readmitted to Labour ahead of the next election. Election-denying lawmakers hold key election oversight roles
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 7 HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Republican lawmakers who have spread election conspiracy theories and falsely claimed that the 2020 presidential outcome was rigged are overseeing legislative committees charged with setting election policy in two major political battleground states. Divided government in Pennsylvania and Arizona means that any voting restrictions those GOP legislators propose is likely to fail. Even so, the high-profile appointments give the lawmakers a platform to cast further doubt on the integrity of elections in states that will be pivotal in selecting the next president in 2024. Awarding such plum positions to lawmakers who have repeated conspiracies and spread misinformation cuts against more than two years of evidence showing there were no widespread problems or fraud in the last presidential election. It also would appear to run counter to the … [Read more...] about Election-denying lawmakers hold key election oversight roles

Spot vs. shelter dogs: Who will win the title of Goodest Boy?
For thousands of years, the bond between people and their dogs remained unshakably strong. But with machines evolving faster than either species can keep up with, it’s not hard to imagine that man and his best friend could one day face an existential crisis forewarned by science fiction. Will robots replace humans in the workforce and then go on to supplant dogs as our preferred four-legged companions? Humanity’s longtime fear of being replaced by tech reached a fever pitch recently as AI such as ChatGPT and Lensa went viral for generating surprisingly competent essays, stories, artwork, coding and even medical diagnoses through machine learning. But with increasing interest in Boston Dynamics’ robot dog Spot — which may one day also incorporate AI — we might not be the only ones who need to worry about that dystopian future.
