Mr. Pickles and his companion Mrs. Pickles are now the parents of three new hatchlings following a surprise egg-laying at the Houston Zoo. The baby tortoises—named Dill, Gherkin and Jalapeño—are smaller than the palm of a hand, according to photos shared by the zoo. They will remain behind the scenes in the Reptile & Amphibian House at the zoo until they are big enough to safely join their parents in their habitat. The hatchlings reportedly came as a surprise—the zoo's herpetology keeper happened upon Mrs. Pickles as she was laying her eggs at closing time. Researchers from New York University and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences have revealed that the Shang Dynasty would regularly sacrifice puppies , with many buried while still alive. In the study, the researchers rounded up data from several Shang Dynasty burial sites where dog sacrifices occurred. At one site in the ancient city of Zhengzhou, the researchers discovered eight pits containing the remains of 92 tied-up dogs - several of which are believed to have been buried alive. BIRD flu has killed two dolphins for the first time in the UK. The animals were discovered last month in Devon and Pembrokeshire amid growing fears after the virus jumped to mammals. A highly contagious strain of avian influenza H5N1, commonly known as bird flu , was confirmed in the mammals by the Animal and Plant Health Agency. The virus has wiped out millions of birds worldwide over the last two years, but it also affects other animals. Although it is the first time dolphins have been killed by the infection in British waters, 23 other mammals have been affected.
