Immigration and Customs Enforcement has arrested a woman accused of attacking a man earlier this month for wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat inside a Mexican restaurant in Falmouth, the agency said Tuesday. Rosiane Santos, 41, who was charged with assault and battery and disorderly conduct after police say she lashed out against 23-year-old Bryton Turner on Feb. 15, is an “unlawfully present citizen of Brazil,” ICE spokesman John Mohan said in a statement to Boston.com. Santos was arrested Tuesday near Falmouth by deportation officers with ICE’s Fugitive Operations Team, he said. “She is presently in ICE custody and has been entered into removal proceedings before the federal immigration courts,” Mohan said in the statement. When reached by phone Tuesday afternoon, Santos directed questions to her immigration attorney, Katarina Kozakova. In an interview, Kozakova said Santos has a pending green card application and is married to a U.S. … [Read more...] about A woman allegedly assaulted a man in a ‘MAGA’ hat. A Falmouth woman is facing charges after police there say she verbally harassed and physically assaulted a man wearing a “Make America Great Again” cap at a restaurant earlier this month. Authorities say Rosiane Santos, 41, perpetuated the confrontation between her and 23-year-old Bryton Turner, of Mashpee, as he took in a night out with friends at Casa Vallarta Mexican Restaurant on Davis Straits on Feb. 15. In video taken by Turner posted to Facebook, Santos is seen knocking the hat off his head and pushing his head down. Turner told police he was minding his own business when Santos “began to verbally assault him” because of his hat, Falmouth Police Officer Newton Cardoso wrote in an incident report. Santos told Cardoso that Turner was a “motherf*****” for supporting President Donald Trump and that Turner should not be allowed in a Mexican restaurant while wearing the red hat, according to the report filed in Falmouth District Court. “See … [Read more...] about A woman allegedly assaulted a man in a local Mexican restaurant for wearing a ‘Make America Great Again’ hat
SAN MATEO, Calif. — Patrons won't be served at a Silicon Valley restaurant if they wear a "Make America Great Again" baseball cap. J. Kenji Lopez-Alt, a chef-partner of the Wursthall restaurant in San Mateo, California, said in a tweet last weekend that he views the hats as symbols of intolerance and hate. "It hasn't happened yet, but if you come to my restaurant wearing a MAGA cap, you aren't getting served, same as if you come in wearing a swastika, white hood, or any other symbol of intolerance and hate," the San Francisco Chronicle reported Thursday. The tweet was no longer available Thursday but the newspaper reported it had more than 2,100 likes and more than 200 retweets as of Wednesday afternoon. The red hats, which are sold on President Donald Trump's campaign website, have become polarizing. The hats were worn by some Kentucky high school students involved in a Jan. 18 confrontation with a Native American elder near the Lincoln Memorial. Lopez-Alt wrote the 2015 book … [Read more...] about Silicon Valley eatery bans ‘Make America Great Again’ hats
Kristen Jordan Shamus Detroit Free Press Published 5:16 PM EST Jan 25, 2019 More than 1,300 reader comments were made in fewer than 24 hours in response to the story published on Freep.com Thursday evening about whether President Donald Trump's signature Make America Great Again baseball caps have come to symbolize racism. Some of the remarks were posted to the story itself, others on the Free Press Facebook page about the hats, which have become the subject of heated debate, especially following a racially charged incident Jan. 18 near Washington, D.C.'s Lincoln Memorial. That's where students from Covington Catholic School were wearing MAGA hats when they got into a confrontation with a Native American man from Michigan. Also in the area at the time of the standoff were four members of the fringe religious group the Black Hebrew Israelites, who hurled insults at the students. The encounter led some to say that the hats have come … [Read more...] about Are Trump’s MAGA hats racist? Here’s what Freep readers have to say
