Inside terrifying blackmail plot that led to Tesco Clubcards rollout after customer demanded £250k in deranged scheme

March 22, 2023 by www.thesun.co.uk Leave a Comment

BRITS have been shocked to learn that Tesco’s beloved Clubcard scheme was set up because of a blackmail plot by a deranged customer. In 1995 Frank Riolfo claimed that he had HIV and threatened to contaminate food unless the supermarket launched the cards used today by more than 20 million people in the UK alone. The then 50-year-old from Dudley demanded £250,000 - but only managed to steal £7,000 before being caught. His bizarre plot began when he called up the manager of a Tesco store in Kettering, Northamptonshire , calling himself St Mary-Ann. Riolfo told the shop boss he had contaminated food at the store - and when staff searched the shop they found a pack of frozen peas and butterfly prawns had been injected with black ink. Three days later he sent a blackmail demand to Tesco’s head office - demanding they set up a Clubcard scheme to pay him. Legendary Noughties indie band unrecognisable as they respond in very clever way to viral TikTok of their huge hit

March 22, 2023 by www.thesun.co.uk Leave a Comment

INDIE legends The Kooks have won the internet after responding to a viral TikTok cover of their biggest hit in the best way. The group, who shot to fame in 2006 with their song Naive, edited themselves into a clip of musician and Kooks fan Calum Bowie performing their song on a rainy day in Edinburgh. The original video saw Calum, with an acoustic guitar in hand, gratefully receiving a scrunched up £20 from a passerby who was impressed by his version of the song. He repeatedly told the kind person that he wasn't actually busking and that they didn't need to give him anything, but the fan wouldn't take no for an answer. Getting the note to Calum, who was stood above street level, proved tricky, and it took numerous attempts before he caught the money. He shared his appreciation by launching back into the song with a big smile on his face. Uganda passes bill to jail all gay people: Rights group condemn ‘appalling’ law in country where homosexuality is already illegal

March 22, 2023 by www.dailymail.co.uk Leave a Comment

The Ugandan parliament has passed a bill setting out jail terms of up to 10 years for offences related to same-sex relationships, forcing rights groups to condemn the legislation as 'appalling'. The Bill was passed late on Tuesday inside a packed parliamentary chamber in the capital Kampala. A roll call was ordered by the House speaker who had repeatedly warned it was necessary to identify those who might oppose the legislation. It was supported by nearly all of the 389 legislators present. Speaker Anita Among said: 'Congratulations. Whatever we are doing, we are doing it for the people of Uganda.' An earlier version of the Bill enacted in 2014 was later nullified by a court on procedural grounds. The east African country is notorious for its intolerance of homosexuality - which was criminalised under colonial-era laws. Amnesty International subsequently urged Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni to veto the anti-gay bill, warning it was 'a grave assault' on LGBTQ people. But he … [Read more...] about Uganda passes bill to jail all gay people: Rights group condemn ‘appalling’ law in country where homosexuality is already illegal

‘Not going to jump ship’: Here’s how First Republic Bank customers are reacting to its struggles

March 22, 2023 by www.sfchronicle.com Leave a Comment

Wall Street investors are dumping First Republic Bank stock as if it were radioactive. Some of its largest depositors are yanking out their money as if its collapse were imminent. But allegiance remains strong among many in the impressive roster of companies, nonprofits and individuals featured in the San Francisco bank’s marketing campaign, even as they are bombarded with news reports that First Republic is fighting for its existence. Several said the bank proactively contacted them and helped them arrange their funds so they would be covered by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. guarantee, which applies to accounts up to $250,000 each. “I’m fiercely loyal to them,” said Dr. Eduardo Peña Dolhun, a San Francisco family physician and founder of two medical companies, DripDrop and AlphaSperm, who has been banking with First Republic for almost two decades. “They helped me build my entire professional life and have been incredibly supportive through my early years, and my … [Read more...] about ‘Not going to jump ship’: Here’s how First Republic Bank customers are reacting to its struggles

Flooded out but resilient: Pajaro residents who stayed behind face mounting challenges

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 2 PAJARO, Monterey County — For nearly a week, Diego Garcia stayed at home in this farmworker community with his mother and three siblings — refusing to evacuate even as the water from the levee break flooded the street outside their apartment. The family couldn’t afford to pay for a hotel or another place to stay. But as the flood soaked the fields where Garcia’s mother picks strawberries, Garcia, 18, knew he had to leave his family and return to school and work in Watsonville. So the high school junior grabbed some clothes and drove past the police stationed at Pajaro River Bridge, tasked with keeping people out of Pajaro. Since he left three days ago, Garcia has returned to his high school, worked after school at a butcher’s shop and applied for a job at a local pizza shop. At night, he sleeps in his car at a park in Watsonville. “It’s hard,” Garcia said. “No one is going to have money … [Read more...] about Flooded out but resilient: Pajaro residents who stayed behind face mounting challenges

Oleksandr Usyk’s team slam Tyson Fury’s ‘unacceptable, disrespectful demands’ after fight talks collapse

March 22, 2023 by www.thesun.co.uk Leave a Comment

OLEKSANDR USYK'S promoter confirmed talks to fight Tyson Fury are over - following too many "unacceptable" and "disrespectful" demands. Usyk publicly accepted Fury's "greedy" offer of just a 70/30 split to unify all four belts on April 29 at Wembley. But behind the scenes organisers struggled to get the deal over the line as the target date fast approached. Now Usyk's team have spoken out to confirm the collapse of the historic title unification and pinned the blame on Fury. Promoter Alex Krassyuk told talkSPORT : “The fight is called off. The reason for that is it went too far. "There was a feeling that after Usyk accepted 70-30, Tyson Fury started thinking that he could put a tether around his neck and start riding Usyk as much as he can.
