French to protest pro IVF law for single women, lesbians

· October 6, 2019 ·

Thousands of people prepared to descend on Paris on Sunday (Oct 6) to protest a government plan to let single women and lesbians become pregnant with fertility treatments, the first major social reform since France legalised gay marriage in 2013. IVF treatment is currently only available to heterosexual couples in France. (Photo: AFP/Josep Lago) Organisers say they are hoping 100,000 will turn out against a law heading to the Senate this month, after it was approved by the lower house of parliament in September. President Emmanuel Macron pledged during his 2017 election campaign to push the law despite deep resistance among right-wing opponents as well as conservative Roman Catholics and other religious groups. They had mobilised massively in 2012 and 2013 against a move by Macron's Socialist predecessor Francois Hollande to legalise marriage for homosexual couples, with one Paris protest attracting 340,000 people according to police. But that law did not allow lesbian … [Read more...] about French to protest pro IVF law for single women, lesbians

Suffolk sheriff’s department ending contract with ICE

· October 7, 2019 ·

Suffolk Sheriff Steven W. Tompkins attributed the rise in the number of women incarcerated or involved in the criminal justice system to substance abuse, homelessness, mental health issues, and “relationships that have compromised them.” According to Tompkins, gender-specific programming allows his office to help address issues of domestic violence, sexual exploitation, and substance use disorders. “This is not about ICE, this is not about Trump, this is not about the federal government, this is about saving lives,” he said. The decision was grounded in helping people get back on their feet, according to Tompkins. “To do that, I need space,” he said. The South Bay facility houses about 1,200 detainees, according to Tompkins. Of that number about 200 are ICE detainees, who are all housed in the same building, he said. The move will allow his office to house 200 to 250 more women at South Bay by the end of the month, he said. There are 80 … [Read more...] about Suffolk sheriff’s department ending contract with ICE

CBP holds migrants longer than it is supposed to, lawyer claims

· October 14, 2019 ·

Lawyers are accusing Customs and Border Protection in San Diego of breaking their own policies and potentially the law by holding migrant children in custody longer than the agency is allowed to.Under the Flores Settlement Agreement, the federal government generally cannot detain migrant children and their parents together for more than brief periods. The agreement states CBP should not hold children for more than 72 hours and Immigration and Customs Enforcement should not detain them for more than 20 days. However, asylum-seeking children are routinely held for more than 72 hours in San Diego, according to Erika Pinheiro, a staff attorney with the nonprofit Al Otro Lado.“We are seeing cases of prolonged detention every day,” she said. “There is no rhyme or reason to it. Sometimes they are released the same day, sometimes it’s a week later. We’ve had cases of people in CBP custody for three weeks.” Many of the people being held in CBP custody are part … [Read more...] about CBP holds migrants longer than it is supposed to, lawyer claims

Breast cancer charity a mother-daughter passion project

· October 9, 2019 ·

When a woman receives a breast cancer diagnosis, that marks day one of a long race to restore her health. But for many San Diego women, there are more immediate short-term hurdles to overcome, like paying the rent or utilities and co-pays and prescriptions not covered by insurance. Now that gap is being filled by Shades of Pink Foundation California, an Encinitas nonprofit run by mother-daughter volunteers Vembra Holnagel, 63, and Kianne Farmer, 34. Since its founding in 2013, the all-volunteer Shades of Pink California has awarded a combined $178,000 in onetime cash grants to 143 San Diego County women with breast cancer. The now-$2,000 grants have been awarded to women in active cancer treatment who are facing unexpected financial challenges, often related to the loss of a job or leave of absence from work to focus on their health. In most cases, applicants approved for grants receive a check in as little as 48 hours.“By the time they reach out to us, they’re already deep … [Read more...] about Breast cancer charity a mother-daughter passion project

The descendants of Salem’s ‘witches’ are all around us

· October 9, 2019 ·

Twenty women and men were executed following the trials — 19 were hanged, one was crushed to death — and another five died in jail. “The place of the executions is a great connector to the past,” said Marilynne Roach, a Watertown author and scholar who was part of the Gallows Hill Project. “Remembering is a painful process.” “The legacy of what transpired here crosses into the imaginations and consciousness of our community, our Commonwealth, and even our country,” said Salem Mayor Kimberley Driscoll. “It’s a legacy that speaks to the need for the rule of law and the impartiality of the judiciary.’’ The human legacy of the witch trials is equally important. Genealogy and finding ancestry through DNA are popular, and many people are surprised when they find a family connection to the trials. “I have lived in Salem all my life,” said John Keenan, Salem State’s president. “Growing up, … [Read more...] about The descendants of Salem’s ‘witches’ are all around us
