Six takeaways from Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Arizona and Washington primaries

August 3, 2022 by edition.cnn.com Leave a Comment

(CNN) Kansas voters handed abortion-rights advocates a massive victory Tuesday, surging to the polls to defeat a measure that would have allowed the GOP-led legislature to impose new restrictions. The vote in Kansas was one of the first tests of the potency of abortion rights at the ballot box since the Supreme Court's decision to reverse Roe v. Wade and end the federal protection of abortion access. Catch up on the night's news here Meanwhile, in Michigan , one of the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump was ousted, while the matchup was set for what will be one of the key gubernatorial races this fall. And in Missouri , the political comeback of a former governor was shut down. In Arizona , local elections officials were still counting votes, but some of the slate of statewide candidates who were endorsed by former President Donald Trump and promoted his lies about election fraud won their Republican primaries, CNN … [Read more...] about Six takeaways from Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Arizona and Washington primaries

The Carried Interest Loophole Survives Another Political Battle

August 5, 2022 by www.nytimes.com Leave a Comment

WASHINGTON — Once again, carried interest carried the day. The last-minute removal by Senate Democrats of a provision in the climate and tax legislation that would narrow what is often referred to as the “carried interest loophole” represents the latest win for the private equity and hedge fund industries. For years, those businesses have successfully lobbied to kill bills that aimed to end or limit a quirk in the tax code that allows executives to pay lower tax rates than many of their salaried employees. In recent weeks, it appeared that the benefit could be scaled back, but a last-minute intervention by Senator Kyrsten Sinema, the Arizona Democrat, eliminated what would have been a $14 billion tax increase targeting private equity. Lawmakers’ inability to address a tax break that Democrats and some Republicans have called unfair underscores the influence of lobbyists for the finance industry and how difficult it can be to change the tax code. In addition to doing away … [Read more...] about The Carried Interest Loophole Survives Another Political Battle

How a Last-Minute Lobbying Blitz Watered Down a Climate Bill Tax

August 8, 2022 by www.nytimes.com Leave a Comment

WASHINGTON — An hour after Democrats released the text of their climate and tax legislation, Washington lobbyists for the private equity industry sprang into action. With a final Senate vote nearing on the major package on Sunday, a late addition would have subjected companies controlled by private investment funds to a new 15 percent corporate minimum tax in the legislation that was supposed to apply to America’s biggest corporations. But a last-minute mobilization of political muscle and direct pleas to Senator Kyrsten Sinema, the Arizona Democrat who opposes tax increases and is sympathetic to private equity, got the measure scrapped. The blitz was emblematic of the messy nature of tax policymaking and how policies meant to curb tax avoidance can spring new carve-outs on the fly. The issue stems from how private equity firms work: They typically invest in a portfolio of companies. Under the provision that was the point of contention, if the combined “book income” of … [Read more...] about How a Last-Minute Lobbying Blitz Watered Down a Climate Bill Tax

Trump’s bond with GOP deepens after primary wins, FBI search

August 11, 2022 by www.denverpost.com Leave a Comment

By STEVE PEOPLES NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump’s pick for governor in the swing state of Wisconsin easily defeated a favorite of the Republican establishment. In Connecticut, the state that launched the Bush family and its brand of compassionate conservatism, a fiery Senate contender who promoted Trump’s election lies upset the state GOP’s endorsed candidate. Meanwhile in Washington, Republicans ranging from Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell to conspiracy theorist Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene defended Trump against an unprecedented FBI search. And that was just this week. The rapid developments crystalized the former president’s singular status atop a party he has spent the past seven years breaking down and rebuilding in his image. Facing mounting legal vulnerabilities and considering another presidential run, he needs support from the party to maintain his political career. But, whether they like it or not, many in the party also need Trump, whose endorsement has … [Read more...] about Trump’s bond with GOP deepens after primary wins, FBI search

Family of pilots steer Haselden Construction on approach to 50th year

August 11, 2022 by www.denverpost.com Leave a Comment

The Haselden family packed into a Cessna 182 plane for vacations in the summer like most families in the 1970s would hop in a station wagon. One summer, the family of five spent two days flying from Denver to Marathon, Fla., for a fishing trip, stopping at least three airports along the way to refuel and rest. “That’s a long way to go in a small plane, but it was like our family truckster,” said Byron Haselden, the youngest of the family’s three sons and CEO of Haselden Construction. Flying started as a hobby for the Haselden family, but soon became an integral part of Haselden Construction, which launched almost 50 years ago and is on track for $400 million in annual revenue. The Haseldens have an eight-seater jet and a 7,000-square-foot private hangar at Centennial Airport. Jim Haselden was the first to get his pilot’s license in 1972. Then came sons Ed, Mike, Byron and even their mother Millie. The family has upgraded their trips, and the larger jet means they don’t … [Read more...] about Family of pilots steer Haselden Construction on approach to 50th year

Do Senate Republicans have a candidate problem?

July 29, 2022 by edition.cnn.com Leave a Comment

(CNN) Just about every sign is pointing towards Republicans having a fruitful Election Day in three months. And yet, many of the party's candidates in key Senate races across the country are struggling. The latest evidence comes in the form of new battleground state polling from Fox News. In the Pennsylvania Senate race , Democratic nominee John Fetterman led Republican nominee Mehmet Oz by a whopping 11 points, 47% to 36%, in Fox's latest survey. And in the Georgia Senate race , Fox's poll had Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock at 46% and Republican Herschel Walker at 42%. What's the problem for the GOP in those races? Simply put, a lot of voters -- including a notable number of Republicans -- do not like Oz or Walker. More than half (55%) of registered voters in Pennsylvania view Oz, a celebrity doctor, unfavorably, while just 35% view him favorably, according to Fox's polling. By comparison, Fetterman, currently the state's lieutenant governor, is viewed … [Read more...] about Do Senate Republicans have a candidate problem?
