More info A new report has found that Europe could end its reliance on China for electric car batteries by the end of the decade. Figures show that the EU is currently "on track" to produce enough batteries to meet its own demand. Countries in Europe and around the world are looking to phase out petrol and diesel cars, as part of the global push towards net zero. As a result, the global demand for EVs is steadily rising. However, China is a major player in the electric vehicles industry, and is particularly dominant when it comes to refining and processing battery metals. Is This How a Cold War With China Begins?
Produced by ‘The Ezra Klein Show’ There are few issues on which the dominant consensus in Washington has changed as rapidly in recent years as it has on China. Donald Trump made taking on China a core pillar of his campaign and presidency. And while Joe Biden has toned down the harsh anti-China rhetoric of his predecessor, many of his administration’s policies have gone even further than Trump’s did. In October the Biden administration unveiled sweeping controls on advanced chip exports to China — a move that former Trump officials have described as a sharp break from where their administration’s policies were. And the Biden administration doesn’t intend on stopping there: It plans to roll out further controls that target China’s biotech and clean energy sectors. Meanwhile, Biden has repeatedly voiced such strong declarations of American military support for Taiwan that his own administration has had to walk them back. And, in Congress, China policy is one of the few … [Read more...] about Is This How a Cold War With China Begins?
EU’s green policy remains key priority in ASEAN ties
Yvette Tanamal and A. Muh. Ibnu Aqil (The Jakarta Post) PREMIUM Jakarta ● Sat, January 28 2023 The European Green Deal remained among the European Union’s top priorities in both the 27-nation bloc’s 2023 ASEAN and Indonesia strategy, two senior EU diplomats told a press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday. While its environmental stance on trade had caused heated rifts with some of the largest ASEAN member states, Brussels would ensure that other areas of cooperation could continue undisturbed, they added. EU Ambassador to Indonesia Vincent Piket emphasized that finalizing the Indonesia-EU Comprehensive Trade Agreement (IEU-CEPA) by the end of the year would be the dominant concern of the bloc’s negotiators. He added that a total of four negotiation rounds had been scheduled for February, May, July and September. to Read Full Story SUBSCRIBE NOW Starting from IDR 55,500/month Unlimited access to our web and app content e-Post daily digital newspaper … [Read more...] about EU’s green policy remains key priority in ASEAN ties

China calls Washington a ‘bully’ at WTO trade disputes meeting
Flags of US and China are seen in this illustration picture taken August 2, 2022. REUTERS/Florence Lo/Illustration/File Photo GENEVA — China strongly criticized the United States at a World Trade Organization meeting on Friday, calling Washington a “unilateral bully” and a “rule breaker” in the latest escalation of rhetoric between the two trade rivals. China’s ambassador to the WTO Li Chenggang was speaking at a WTO meeting on trade disputes shortly after the United States lodged an appeal against a recent WTO ruling which found that US metal tariffs breached global rules. “These troubling behaviours of the US have clearly depicted an image of the US as a unilateral bully, a rule breaker, and a supply chain disruptor,” he said, according to a copy of his speech obtained by Reuters. The WTO has made important rulings against the United States in recent weeks, including the metals ruling involving China and a separate dispute with Hong Kong over labelling. Cash-strapped Finnish zoo may have to return giant pandas to China
FILE PHOTO: Female panda Jin Baobao, also called Lumi, is pictured at Ahtari Zoo, in Ahtari, Finland February 17 , 2018. Lehtikuva/Roni Rekomaa via REUTERS HELSINKI — A cash-strapped Finnish zoo said on Friday it was preparing to return two giant pandas on loan from China as it could no longer afford their upkeep. The pandas, named Lumi and Pyry, were brought to Finland in January 2018, nine months after Chinese President Xi Jinping visited the Nordic country and signed a joint agreement on protecting the animals. Ahtari Zoo, a private company which had hoped the pandas would bring visitors to the central Finland location, said it had instead accumulated mounting debts as the pandemic curbed travel. Finland’s government, which gave one-off support of 200,000 euros in 2021, declined an application for a 5 million euro ($5.4 million) grant. The other face of the younger generation. What can we do?
Toronata Tambun (The Jakarta Post) PREMIUM Jakarta ● Sat, January 28, 2023 From 2020 to 2022, I met intensively with the country's future leaders studying in its most-prestigious institutes and universities. There is only a “handful” of them: Bright, smart, English as their second language, visionary, full of energy, promising and diligent students. They stand for what the mainstream media depict as "upper-middle income group, highly educated, latte-sipping and [future] white-collar employees". They are in the 10-percent bracket of university graduates to be absorbed into industries. However, to my demise, a very articulate journalist’s work, “Underprivileged millennials: Being young and poor in Jakarta” ( Tehusijarana , 2020) portrays a less-known side of the country's millennials (the most significant part of Indonesia's much-vaunted “demographic bonus”), which very much to the contrary: "only have a high-school level education, work in blue-collar or … [Read more...] about The other face of the younger generation. Households in Staffordshire, West Midlands, Cornwall, Cardiff, and many others, who were previously under Western Power Distribution, have faced no energy supply on Friday morning. While these areas are now run by the National Grid's electricity distribution service, these power cuts are unrelated to National Grid's plan to issue three hour blackouts if energy supplies are low this winter. In many of these cases, the National Grid estimates that it will resolve the issue within hours. … [Read more...] about Hundreds of homes in England and Wales left without power as National Grid suffers cuts
