VIRGIN Atlantic pilots are set to strike just before Christmas. Find out if your flight will be affected. Will the industrial action affect my flight? Pilots who are members of the Professional Pilots Union (PPU) will walkout from December 22 to 25, December 30 to January 2 and then from January 4 to 7, inclusive. The airline operates flights from London Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Glasgow and Belfast. It flies to destinations in the USA, Asia, Africa and the Caribbean, as well as Dubai and Cancun. The union called a ballot after it was excluded from talks over proposed changes to pilot’s benefits. The company does not recognise the union and has only dealt with the British Airline Pilots Association. PPU members backed strike action with 71.5 percent of those that voted, backing industrial action. A total of 72 percent of members voted with the union representing around a third of the airline’s pilots. A spokesman for the PPU said: “It’s the last straw; … [Read more...] about Virgin Atlantic Christmas strikes – will the industrial action affect my flight?
By James Osborne Updated 11:47 am CST, Friday, November 30, 2018 LONG BEACH, CA - JULY 16: A rare and endangered blue whale, one of at least four feeding 11 miles off Long Beach Harbor in the Catalina Channel, spouts near offshore oil rigs after a long dive July 16, 2008 near Long Beach, California. In decades past, blue whales were rarely seen along California's coastline but their migration and feeding patterns are changing. In the past four years sightings in southern California have increased dramatically and blue whales have been reported almost daily this summer. Scientists suspect that climate change is having an effect on the food of the blues but other factors have not been ruled out. Before whalers stepped up their kill rate in the 1800s, there were at least 220,000 to 300,000 around the world. Today less than 11,000 survive worldwide with 1,200 to 2,000 in the Pacific waters off California. Blue whales are the largest animals on the planet, growing up to 110 … [Read more...] about Seismic testing approved in Atlantic, as Trump pursues drilling in Atlantic
VIRGIN Atlantic is in talks to buy Fly Be – which could mean changes in price for the low-cost airline’s customers. While fares of European flights shouldn’t rise, domestic flights may become pricier if the sale goes ahead. The news comes after Fly Be put itself up for sale earlier this month. Sky News reports that Virgin is in talks with Fly Be, four years after Little Red shut, its regional airline. Little Red ran services to Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Manchester from Heathrow, but shut after a lack of passenger demand. A source revealed that buying the airline would be a good move for Virgin as it would be able to link its transatlantic flights with destinations in the UK. It would also look to gain more landing slots at Heathrow that are reserved for domestic flights. However prices could change as a result – and domestic flights could become more expensive. Rob Burgess, editor of frequent flyer website headforpoints.co.uk told Sun Online Travel: "I … [Read more...] about Virgin Atlantic is in talks to buy budget airline FlyBe – and flights could get more expensive
(CNN) — If someone told you to jump into an often tumultuous and always frigid North Atlantic Ocean from a 30-foot-high cliff in Ireland, would you do it? Turns out, not only are people doing it, tourists are increasingly paying for the privilege. I was one of them recently, and after jumping into the uncertain abyss, I came away with the undisputed highlight from a week-long trip to the fabled island -- not to mention newfound respect for the power of the sea. Colloquially known as "coasteering" and first invented in nearby Wales, the amphibious activity combines rough sea swimming, intertidal caving, cliff-climbing and leaping from extreme heights into the exposed sea below. Avoiding impact with rocks, hypothermia and drowning is all part of the "fun." Soaring to the sea off Northern Ireland's Atlantic coast. Courtesy The Jungle NI In truth, coasteering in Ireland is a lot safer, less extreme and more enjoyable than it sounds. For around $60 per person, local guides … [Read more...] about Cliff-jumping off Ireland’s Atlantic coast
