Marc Benioff is the rare tech mogul who appreciates hometown pride and physical space. The CEO and co-founder of Salesforce has donated $110 million to public schools in San Francisco and Oakland through the giant firm’s foundation. He led a successful 2018 ballot drive to combat homelessness by taxing corporations like his homegrown tech behemoth. Now I’d like to see Benioff explore ways to make San Francisco’s sagging Financial District into a robust mixed-use neighborhood — starting with Salesforce West, the 43-story office tower that Salesforce owns at 50 Fremont St., a half-empty monolith from early 1985 that could become a test lab for turning old towers into new strongholds of urban life. This may sound presumptuous, but Benioff hasn’t been shy in airing his concerns about the commercial heart of the city where he was born, and where his company occupies three towers at Fremont and Mission streets. “We’ve a very homogeneous downtown. You have to rebalance,” Benioff … [Read more...] about This half-empty office tower could help transform downtown San Francisco

San Francisco population declines again, hitting lowest level since 2012
New data out this week suggests that San Francisco’s exodus may be slowing. The city lost just 0.5% of its population between July 2021 and July 2022, according to California’s Department of Finance , a much smaller percentage than the 3.7% decrease in the previous year. That puts the city’s population at 834,046 during that time. While that might be good news for the city, even a smaller dip puts the overall city population at its lowest level since 2012. Even with stories of residents fleeing the state flooding the media in the past few years, research has shown most people simply moved to other parts of California, if not just farther out into the suburbs of the Bay Area. Still, all Bay Area counties lost residents in this time period, with Marin County experiencing the largest outflow. Marin County lost 1.5%, while Napa lost 1.3% and San Mateo lost 1% of its residents. That’s a loss of 3,795, 1,845 and 8,081 people, respectively. San Francisco’s population … [Read more...] about San Francisco population declines again, hitting lowest level since 2012

‘I was going to break her calves’: What suspect in Pelosi attack said in jailhouse interview
In a jailhouse interview shortly after his arrest, the suspect accused in the October attack of Paul Pelosi, David Wayne DePape, told police that he targeted the Pelosi home because he planned to hold U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi hostage. He was enraged by what he said were lies that she and Democrats had spread about former President Donald Trump, he told police. “It originates with Hillary, but like Pelosi ran with the lie as much as or more than anyone. Honestly, like, day in day out, the person who was on the TV lying everyday was Pelosi,” DePape said during an Oct. 28 jailhouse interview, according to a recording that law enforcement officials released on Friday. In a nearly 18-minute interrogation with a San Francisco police sergeant, DePape spouted a host of conspiracy theories and told police that he intended to try to force Nancy Pelosi to recant what he called her lies — and harm her if she refused. He repeated Trump’s false claim that Democrats stole the 2020 presidential … [Read more...] about ‘I was going to break her calves’: What suspect in Pelosi attack said in jailhouse interview
Driver in lime-green Lamborghini flips over, catches fire after alleged DUI crash
In the early hours of Friday morning, Petaluma police responded to a reported traffic collision to find a “lime green Lamborghini overturned and fully engulfed in flames,” officials said. When officers were dispatched to the area of Casa Grande Road at Ely Boulevard South just before 12:30 a.m., it was reported that the driver of the lime green luxury sports car had been driving at a high speed, when he lost control at a roundabout and collided with multiple parked cars before flipping over. The parked cars that had been hit suffered major damage, police said. Officers said they contacted the driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, and that he “displayed objective signs of alcohol impairment.” He has minor injuries and was arrested for driving under the influence. The driver was first sent to the hospital for “precautionary reasons” before being sent to Sonoma County Jail. The Petaluma Police advised that drivers plan ahead if they are going to drink alcohol by … [Read more...] about Driver in lime-green Lamborghini flips over, catches fire after alleged DUI crash
New study catalogs water pollutants released by Bay Area oil refineries
Chevron’s oil refinery in Richmond is among the U.S. petroleum producers that most regularly exceed limits aimed at keeping pollution out of local waterways, according to a nonprofit that ranked it ranked 8th worst out of 81 oil refineries after studying Environmental Protection Agency reports. From 2019 through 2021, the E.P.A. recorded 27 instances when the Richmond facility reported dumping unpermittedamounts of regulated substances into San Pablo Bay, researchers with national nonprofit Environmental Integrity Project found . None of those violations resulted in official enforcement actions or financial penalties, the group said. Chevron representatives said the report is misleading because federal data includes stormwater discharge treated at the facility. State data, the company says, does not include the stormwater releases and shows they were in violation just once in that same two year time period, company spokesman Allen Ross said. The bulk of the project’s report, … [Read more...] about New study catalogs water pollutants released by Bay Area oil refineries
