Ten local student artists were honored by the Helix Water District for their “Water Is Life” posters at an awards ceremony during the district’s May 22 board meeting.Judged by a panel of Helix employees, the winning posters will be forwarded to the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California for consideration to be included in its 2020 “Water Is Life” calendar. Each year, MWD, one of Helix’s wholesale water providers, holds the regional poster contest for students in kindergarten through sixth grade, in hopes of increasing student awareness of water. The Helix Water District promotes the contest to all kindergarten through sixth-grade schools within its service area.This year, 220 students from 20 schools submitted posters to Helix depicting how to use water wisely. The photo, titled Mother’s Hope, taken by Malaysian Edwin Ong Wee Kee, won Grand Prize at the Hamdan International Photography Award (HIPA) this year. But controversy erupted after the result was announced, with evidence surfacing that the photo might have been staged. Another photographer, Ab Rashid, shared on his Facebook page a behind-the-scenes photo with the same characters in the photo, the ethnic minority mother and her two children. Rashid’s photo showed many lensmen taking pictures at the same time. Kee took the photo, which captures a H’Mong mother with a speech disorder holding her children, during a recent trip to Vietnam's northern Yen Bai Province.
