He uses it to haul chairs, tents and tables to gatherings all across Venezuela's sprawling capital. The once-white paint is slightly yellowish and the body shows a bit of rust, a few dings. The odometer was already broken when he bought it 12 years ago. And with business picking up as the pandemic seems to slow, he's putting in more miles — and making more trips to mechanics, including a recent visit to investigate a snoring-like noise emanating from the left rear wheel. “When the mechanics ask for parts — the truck asks you — you have to buy them,” Ron said. “One cannot refuse because the truck is a resource to make money.” He's philosophical about the need to keep … [Read more...] about On Venezuelan roads, old cars prevail, break down everywhere

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — There’s a love story in the name of this restaurant, Bar B Quing With My Honey, and meeting the owners puts you right in the middle of it. The latest chapter is being written in midtown Mobile, where Glenda Marks Witherspoon and her husband, Timothy Witherspoon, have been operating their newest restaurant for a few months. It’s a big place with a big menu: Barbecue, burgers, loaded fries, fish, shrimp and grits. There’s a Sunday brunch, and they’re adding a hot bar for the lunch crowd. If you can talk yourself out of going straight for the barbecue, you need to try the fish tacos. But the story starts long before this location or this menu, and as they tell it, Glenda and her honey sound like a couple of characters who should be at the heart of some entrepreneurial reality show. They finish each other’s sentences. They tell stories on each other. Her mom ran Mount Vernon restaurant for decades. Jackie’s Kitchen. “I grew up in the business,” said Glenda Marks … [Read more...] about There’s a love story in Alabama barbecue restaurant’s name

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Alabama’s Republican primary for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by retiring U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby has become a bitter high-dollar contest with the three strongest contenders jockeying for the nomination. The leading candidates are U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks who won — and then lost — former President Donald Trump’s backing in the race; Katie Boyd Britt, the former leader of Business Council of Alabama and Shelby’s former chief of staff; and Mike Durant, an aerospace company owner best known as the helicopter pilot whose capture during a U.S. military mission in Somalia was chronicled in the “Black Hawk Down" book and subsequent movie. Lillie Boddie, Karla M. Dupriest and Jake Schafer are also seeking the GOP nomination. Observers say it’s hard to predict whether the nomination will be settled in Tuesday’s primary. The fractured field increases the chances that … [Read more...] about GOP primary race for Alabama Senate seat turns bitter

An elderly couple are trying to sue their only child for half a million pounds because he and his wife have failed to provide them with a grandchild. Sanjiv Ranjan Prasad and his wife Sadhana Prasad are taking their son to court demanding compensation of £530,000 if he doesn’t have a child in the next year. They even told ANI news agency they “didn’t care about gender, just wanted a grandchild”. "My son has been married for six years but they are still not planning a baby. At least if we have a grandchild to spend time with, our pain will become bearable," the couple said in their petition filed with a court in Haridwar last week. Mr Prasad said he was having financial struggles which led to him suing his own son who married in 2016. He also claims that his daughter-in-law and her family control his son’s money and have stopped them from having a child. The embittered dad claimed he spent all of his money on his son’s education in the US and is undergoing a financial … [Read more...] about Couple sue their son for £500,000 because they haven’t had a grandchild
