Flying "economy light" works great for minimalist packers who don't mind middle seats. Also known as "basic economy," "low fare" or "saver," the concept is simple: In return for a lower price, you give up the privilege of checking bags (unless you want to pay extra) or stowing them in the overhead compartment; anything you bring must fit under the seat in front of you. You also forfeit your ability to choose your seat, meaning you could wind up anywhere on the plane and next to anyone, although you can adjust your assignment right before flying. This is a fare class that clearly is not aimed at families, much less families with kids too young to sit alone, much less families going on a 10-day trip. Hawaiian Airlines will become the latest airline to add basic economy fares, joining a now widespread trend in the airline industry. The airline plans to debut the new ticketing class in 2019, according to Hawaii news station KHOU. The class will be called Main Cabin Basic, and like other airlines’ basic economy tickets will be a stripped-down version of regular economy. According to KHOU, Hawaiian’s version will include seats assigned after check-in, no ticket changes or standby, and no eligibility for bonus miles (though travelers can earn regular Hawaiian miles). Colorado Springs sales tax collections rose again last month, another sign of a strong local economy in which consumers and businesses continue to spend.In November, the city collected $13.8 million in revenue from its sales tax, up 6.8 percent over the same month last year, according to a report released Tuesday by the Colorado Springs Finance Department. November’s revenues reflect purchases made in October.The city has seen year-over-year gains in sales tax revenues each month during 2018. Year to date, the city has collected $140.1 million — a nearly 7 percent jump from the same period in 2017.Colorado Springs levies a 2 percent sales tax on items such as cars, TVs and appliances — goods and services other than food and prescription drugs. The tax pays for more than half of the general fund budget, which includes police and fire protection, parks and other basic services.
