BEIJING: Police detained two students in Beijing on Thursday (Nov 8) who were part of a group protesting outside an Apple store about alleged worker exploitation, according to one of the demonstrators. This picture taken and provided to AFP by Zhifan Liu shows demonstrating students holding placards outside an Apple Store in Beijing. (Photo: AFP/Zhifan Liu) The students were protesting in response to allegations made last month that one of the US company's suppliers was exploiting student workers in southwest China. The two students detained were from Renmin University and Peking University - two schools that have seen a surge of student-led labour activism this year. One of the other protesters, a 21-year-old from Renmin University, told AFP that a group of police ordered the students to show their IDs shortly after they finished taking photos in front of the Apple store. A total of 10 students participated in the protest. "They said we were disrupting the order, disrupting … [Read more...] about Police detain two students outside Beijing Apple store

Workers wielding crowbars, jackhammers and written orders from the city knocked out tiled eaves and wooden columns decorated with red lanterns and Tibetan prayer flags. Then they bricked up and painted over spaces that had once been doors or windows. Yuan Hong, who a decade ago opened a hair salon on one of the distinctive alleyways known as hutongs not far from Yonghegong, showed up there early one morning recently to find workers knocking out her glass storefront. “Can you wait for me to get my face washed … [Read more...] about Historic Preservation or Just Ripping Out a Way of Life in Beijing?
WHERE TO STAY The 798 Art Zone, where former factories have been given a new lease of life as galleries and bars. At the centre of it all is The Opposite House, which riffs on this emerging art scene — in March a 14m-high monkey powered by bikes was set up on the side of the building. Japanese architect Kengo Kuma is behind the hotel, which is sleek and glassy but with warm touches, such as deep wooden baths. There’s a generously sized pool and gym, and gifts are provided every night, from anti-pollution face masks to the Szechuan peppercorns used in the restaurant to take home. WHERE TO DAY TRIP Chairman Mao, whose name is spelt out in stones on the mountainside, said: ‘If you haven’t been to the Great Wall, you aren’t a real man.’ From Beijing, the Mutianyu section of the 10,000 mile long wall is the best — it’s an hour’s drive away and off the tourist trail. Take the orange cable car to the top (it … [Read more...] about Beijing: China’s capital is a beguiling balance of ancient and modern

China's foreign currency reserves declined in October, 2018, suggesting Beijing might be intervening in market to keep its yuan's politically sensitive exchange rate from falling to far against the dollar. Central bank data on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2018, showed the reserves, the world’s biggest, contracted by about $34 billion to just over $3 trillion.(Chinatopix via AP, File) less FILE - In this Nov. 25, 2016, file photo, a clerk counts Chinese currency notes at a bank outlet in Huaibei in central China's Anhui province.
