California Gov. Gavin Newsom recently announced the state’s most infamous death row will be shuttered, transforming San Quentin State Prison into a “restorative justice facility” over the next few years. The $20 million plan will change the prison's name to the San Quentin Rehabilitation Center, and Newsom said by 2025, a panel of civilian experts, former inmates and crime victims will help advise on the facility's changes. "We want to be the preeminent restorative justice facility in the world — that's the goal," Newsom said March 17. As part of the shift, the more than 500 inmates who currently live on San Quentin’s death row will be moved to various prisons throughout the state. Newsom imposed an indefinite moratorium on the death penalty in 2019; prisoners sentenced to death are not eligible for parole. It’s not yet clear what the timeline is for their moves, but some of California’s most notorious killers will likely be relocated over the next few years: Cary Stayner … [Read more...] about San Quentin’s most infamous death row inmates are being moved

A young NBA player created an outdoor oasis at his home near Sacramento, CA , but is ready to part with the impressive spread. Detroit Pistons forward Marvin Bagley III bought the nearly two-acre property in the suburb of Elk Grove, CA , after he was drafted by the Sacramento Kings in 2018. The property is listed for $1,995,000 and has quickly attracted potential buyers. The home is already in pending sale status. “We have multiple offers on it, and we’re just waiting for the right one to come in,” says listing agent Matthew Hindy , with Re/Max Gold Fair Oaks. [Bagley] "made it very resort-style," Hindy notes. "He was traded to another team, and that’s the only reason he’s selling it.” The Kings selected the 6'11" Bagley from Duke and made him the second overall pick in the 2018 NBA draft. After three-and-a-half seasons in Sacramento, the Kings traded him to Detroit in February 2022. Hindy sold the house to Bagley five years ago and has witnessed the … [Read more...] about Ballin’! No to plastic drinking containers
More and more, we hear the calls all the time to reuse, to recycle, and they seem all the more urgent when it comes to plastics. Those of us with young children are familiar with some of the school projects to recycle plastics, mainly to convert them into planters and handicrafts like Christmas lanterns. People also sometimes reuse those plastic bottles for water and other beverages, looking at the bottom of the bottle for a number, with a common conception that the number indicates how many times you can reuse the bottle. The number is enclosed in a “chasing arrows code,” referring to the arrow symbols that make a triangle. But I was shocked to learn only recently, from a chemist friend, that the numbers tell you what kind of plastic is being used, not the number of times you can refill the bottle for drinking water. I looked up several sources for explanations of the numbers and the best one was from www.plasticfreebottles.com. Here are the explanations: The number “1” refers … [Read more...] about No to plastic drinking containers
Kiszla vs. Durando: Who is the Avalanche’s most valuable player in 2022-23?
Kiz: After the victory parade ended and the Avs took the Stanley Cup on a world tour, very little went according to plan for the defending champs. This whole season has felt wonky, off-kilter and a little cursed. But well, well, well. Look at the Avs now, with a real chance to steal first place in the Central Division as the regular season comes down the stretch. Who is the team’s most valuable player during a challenging year? Durando: Say what you want about the inconsistencies that have made this season feel blemished at times, but there’s one constant that still separates the Avalanche: Their three best players are better than your team’s three best players. If the NHL shared the same hot-take TV space as the NBA, there would be a constant debate of where Cale Makar, Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen rank among other generational Big Threes. All three are playing out of their minds this year. None would be a wrong answer. I lean Rantanen for carrying Colorado through its … [Read more...] about Kiszla vs. Durando: Who is the Avalanche’s most valuable player in 2022-23?
What is the parasite cleanse and how is it done?
A parasite cleanse is something that’s been going around the health community for some time now. Any diet, supplement, detox, or other natural treatment that is not a medical prescription is a parasite cleanse. They are intended to eliminate parasites from the body without the use of chemicals or artificial ingredients. Organic is the key when doing this type of cleansing. Why the Pacific Crest Trail will be more dangerous than ever this year
The Pacific Crest Trail draws thousands of people from all experience levels annually. Some are thru-hikers hoping to complete the 2,650-mile trek through California, Oregon and Washington (from the Mexican border to Canada), in one journey, while others are weekend backpackers and day hikers taking on smaller sections of the trail. The hikers regularly contend with challenges like hypothermia, heat exhaustion, poisonous plants, lightning, bears and rattlesnakes, along with wildfires and other impacts of climate change . But this year, experts warn, hikers face one of the greatest risks in the trail’s history: the record-setting Sierra Nevada snowpack . "These large snowpacks can be susceptible to fast melt if the weather conditions are right," Andrew Schwartz, lead scientist at the Central Sierra Snow Lab , told SFGATE. "Periods of above-average temperatures, particularly if they're prolonged, can cause significant rises in stream and river flows, which can be dangerous.” … [Read more...] about Why the Pacific Crest Trail will be more dangerous than ever this year
