Another storm is forecast to hit the Bay Area. Here’s what to expect.

March 27, 2023 by www.sfgate.com Leave a Comment

Here we go again. A low-pressure system from the Gulf of Alaska is forecast to impact the San Francisco Bay Area from Monday through Wednesday, bringing more rain and wind to a region that was battered by a storm less than a week ago. This system is expected to reach peak intensity over the Pacific Ocean off the coast of the California-Oregon border before drifting south along the California coast and passing by the Bay Area. The storm is expected to bring less severe impacts to the region than the last area of low pressure that passed directly over San Francisco, said Rick Canepa, a forecaster with the National Weather Service. The National Weather Service expanded the Monday-Tuesday wind advisory to include the North Bay, East Bay and eastern Santa Clara hills in addition to the coastal areas. The advisory is in effect Monday night through Tuesday afternoon, with peak gusts expected to be up to 40 to 50 mph. Winds are expected to begin developing in the North Bay at … [Read more...] about Another storm is forecast to hit the Bay Area. Here’s what to expect.

A 55-car train with no passengers derailed in Southern California 's Mojave Desert on Monday morning, officials said. Fire engines and a hazardous materials team responded to the scene, the San Bernardino County Fire Department said on Twitter at 10:21 a.m. An hour later, the agency said that hazmat teams were continuing their work. "No current threat to the area," the agency said. The train, which included two locomotives, was carrying iron ore, officials said. The derailment site was in the Mojave National Preserve near Kelso Depot, a historic railroad site about 160 miles northeast of Los Angeles. The incident is under investigation by Union Pacific. Ballin’! NBA Hoopster Marvin Bagley III Lists His Leisure-Ready Pad Near Sacramento for $2M

March 27, 2023 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

A young NBA player created an outdoor oasis at his home near Sacramento, CA , but is ready to part with the impressive spread. Detroit Pistons forward Marvin Bagley III bought the nearly two-acre property in the suburb of Elk Grove, CA , after he was drafted by the Sacramento Kings in 2018. The property is listed for $1,995,000 and has quickly attracted potential buyers. The home is already in pending sale status. “We have multiple offers on it, and we’re just waiting for the right one to come in,” says listing agent Matthew Hindy , with Re/Max Gold Fair Oaks. [Bagley] "made it very resort-style," Hindy notes. "He was traded to another team, and that’s the only reason he’s selling it.” The Kings selected the 6'11" Bagley from Duke and made him the second overall pick in the 2018 NBA draft. After three-and-a-half seasons in Sacramento, the Kings traded him to Detroit in February 2022. Hindy sold the house to Bagley five years ago and has witnessed the … [Read more...] about Ballin’! Why the Pacific Crest Trail will be more dangerous than ever this year

March 27, 2023 by www.sfgate.com Leave a Comment

The Pacific Crest Trail draws thousands of people from all experience levels annually. Some are thru-hikers hoping to complete the 2,650-mile trek through California, Oregon and Washington (from the Mexican border to Canada), in one journey, while others are weekend backpackers and day hikers taking on smaller sections of the trail. The hikers regularly contend with challenges like hypothermia, heat exhaustion, poisonous plants, lightning, bears and rattlesnakes, along with wildfires and other impacts of climate change . But this year, experts warn, hikers face one of the greatest risks in the trail’s history: the record-setting Sierra Nevada snowpack . "These large snowpacks can be susceptible to fast melt if the weather conditions are right," Andrew Schwartz, lead scientist at the Central Sierra Snow Lab , told SFGATE. "Periods of above-average temperatures, particularly if they're prolonged, can cause significant rises in stream and river flows, which can be dangerous.” … [Read more...] about Why the Pacific Crest Trail will be more dangerous than ever this year

You can stay in stables and sleep next to the horses – but it costs £350

March 27, 2023 by www.dailystar.co.uk Leave a Comment

A farmhouse in the Lake District has opened up its stables for guests to sleep right next to its Friesian horses and Shetland ponies - and pay £350 a night for the privilege. When we say 'next to' we mean it; guests are literally in the stable, with just a divider between them and their new neigh-bour. Stable Stays has converted half of one of its horses' homes but don't worry, it won't be a 'mare as the room has bunk beds, a kitchenette, dining table and ensuite wet room, complete with a 'portable eco-loo'. The horses will be on the other side of the divider, meaning you can climb on the top bunk and feed or groom the horses from there. Londoners admire new ‘artwork’ outside Tate Modern – which is actually a filthy radio

March 27, 2023 by www.dailystar.co.uk Leave a Comment

Brits were left bemused as they stopped to admire a new “artwork” that appeared on display outside London's Tate Modern gallery – only to discover it was a shabby old radio. The Makita DAB radio was displayed in a glass box on a plinth in the middle of Millennium Bridge – and quickly became a talking point as passers-by stopped to examine it. The digital device belonged to builder Christopher Kitchenside, 37, from Borehamwood, London – and went on display after winning competition to find Britain's dirtiest radio. It is covered in cement, sand, mud, and brick dust from various building sites, and has a golf ball drilled in to it where the volume dial should be – as well as a car aerial after its original aerial went missing. And its discolouration led one Londoner to estimate the radio dated back to pre-WW2 – despite actually being just six years old. But one sculptor passing by gave it her stamp of approval, calling it a modern masterpiece that deserved to be on display … [Read more...] about Londoners admire new ‘artwork’ outside Tate Modern – which is actually a filthy radio
