Nick Baumgardner Detroit Free Press Published 12:30 PM EST Jan 23, 2019 (Note: This is Part 2 of a series reviewing Michigan football’s 2018 position groups and looking ahead to 2019). Jim Harbaugh wasn't thrilled with Karan Higdon's decision to skip the Peach Bowl, even if he respected his right to do so. But, the silver lining in Michigan not having its top running back for the final game of the season was its ability to evaluate the future. And the future has been underway for more than a month now. In 2018, Higdon was U-M's first 1,000-yard running back since Fitzgerald Toussaint in 2011. And just the second since Mike Hart in 2007. An insane stat, but reality nonetheless. Part 1: Michigan's QB situation as strong as Jim Harbaugh has had Now, he's gone. And Michigan's running back stable features potential – but many questions. "It was (kind of) a taste of the end zone and I want to get back there," redshirt freshman Christian … [Read more...] about Michigan football loses RB production, welcomes talented youth
Lynn Henning The Detroit News Published 12:27 PM EST Jan 20, 2019 Notice the silky set-up as Jake Rogers eases onto his haunches as neatly as dad slides into his La-Z-Boy. Pay attention to the deft wrist-flicks as he receives – not catches, but receives – pitches of any velocity and, seemingly, any location within a 6-foot-1, 190-pound man’s reach. And then, of course, there’s the arm. Rogers’ throws look like World War II tracer bullets. Jonathan Mayo of MLB Pipeline last week put Rogers on the website’s 2019 All Defensive Team culled from scouts across baseball’s minor leagues. “ … (Rogers) continued to show (in 2018) just how good he is behind the dish,” Mayo wrote. “Rogers threw out 55.6 percent of potential base-stealers in the Double A Eastern League in 2018. That brings his career mark up to 48.5 percent, thanks to his arm strength, quick release, and accuracy.” More: 10 players the Tigers could … [Read more...] about Jake Rogers is brilliant defensively, but can he hit his way to Detroit Tigers?

Vince Ellis Detroit Free Press Published 1:11 PM EST Dec 19, 2018 For the last four seasons, Marcus Morris has been one of the best values in the NBA. Signed to a four-year, $20-million contract extension with the Phoenix Suns in 2014, Morris has performed for the Detroit Pistons and now the Boston Celtics. In the meantime, money has rained down upon lesser players. But even during those two seasons he spent with the Pistons, he never wavered in his belief that he would get what he deserves. Morris, 29, is playing the best of his career. He’s a two-way glue guy for one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference. Good timing since he will become a free agent next offseason. “I knew I was going to dip back,” Morris said after the Pistons’ recent victory over the Celtics. “I was going to get it back. Obviously the work I put in this summer prepared me and lining me up hopefully to get what I deserve.” When the Stan Van Gundy front office … [Read more...] about Marcus Morris, Celtics glue guy, set to get paid in summer
