There Is No Reason to Cross the U.S. by Train. But I Did It Anyway. The Voyages Issue By BRIAN REA When my wife and I were married, my mother-in-law told us she had a special gift for us. I wasn’t sure what to expect. She didn’t tell us what the gift was, but she did tell us where it was. In Sweden, on an island, in the forest. As with all magical places, getting to the island in Sweden requires some effort (particularly as my wife, son and I live in Los Angeles). After the plane, the train and a car ride to the countryside, a boat ferries us across the lake from … [Read more...] about The Mystery Gift at the End of the World

Here’s how you can travel and help animals in Guatemala. I have to admit that when I arrived at my volunteer placement to help animals in Guatemala, I felt a little out of my element. Even though I’ve been to 77 countries and all seven continents, there’s something about Mexico that pulls me back again and again. I literally got back from my last trip two weeks ago and I’m already trying to … [Read more...] about Solo Female Travel in Mexico — Is it Safe?
On Wednesday, Switzerland was named 'the best country in the world' for the third year in a row because of factors including its economic and political stability. But we at The Local believe there are plenty of other (more surprising) reasons why the country is so great. Here are just seven of them. So it has happened again: Switzerland has once more been named the 'best country' in the world in the annual Best Countries report – a joint project by digital news service US News & World Report, marketing company Y&R and the Wharton School. Giving their reasons, the people behind the survey-based ranking cited the usual suspects like the country's enticing tax rates and its excellent public health and education systems. Bur while there is no denying factors like these are key in making Switzerland a great place to live, we at The Local believe there are plenty of other reasons why Switzerland deserves the "best country" crown. Here we take a (sometimes … [Read more...] about The REAL reasons why Switzerland is the best country in the world
