Emma Raducanu to move into top 10 world rankings next month despite being dumped out of Wimbledon in second round
EMMA RADUCANU will become a top-10 player next month despite being dumped out of Wimbledon. But Britain’s Golden Girl has been told to “raise her level” as she continues to negotiate life on the tennis tour. Raducanu was beaten 6-3 6-3 by Caroline Garcia in the second round of SW19 on Centre Court on Wednesday evening. However, the 19-year-old will move UP a place from world No11 when the tournament is over, due to a quirk in the rankings system. There are no ranking points available at Wimbledon and players like Czech Karolina Pliskova - the 2021 losing finalist who was beaten by an emotional Katie Boulter on Thursday - will drop out of the top 10. Raducanu will regroup now before heading to New York for the defence of her US Open crown. Boxer Jai Opetaia BREAKS his jaw in second round but carries on to win cruiserweight title on points vs Mairis Briedis
BOXER Jai Opetaia battled to win the cruiserweight title against Mairis Briedis - despite his jaw being broken in the second round. The Australian pulled through to win the IBF and The Ring cruiserweight titles in a unanimous points decision. This is despite the 27-year-old sustaining a suspected broken jaw earlier in the no-holds barred fight against three-times champion Briedis. The contest finished 10 minutes before midnight on Saturday as Opetaia overcame his injury to win. Briedis had only previously lost to Oleksander Usyk in his 29-fight professional career, and exchanged blows with Opetaia throughout the bout. One of his punches knocked out Opetaia's mouthguard and appeared to break his jaw. Emma Raducanu survives tricky test to reach Wimbledon second round with straight sets win over Alison van Uytvanck
EMMA RADUCANU survived a test of her nerve, stamina and side-strain to emerge victorious on her Centre Court debut. The teenage author of British sport’s greatest fairytale defeated Belgium’s Alison van Uytvanck 6-4 6-4 in 100 minutes to clinch a place in the second round of Wimbledon. Since her historic and astonishing victory as a qualifier and a rookie at last year’s US Open - where she strung together ten matches without dropping a set - Raducanu has won more blue-chip sponsors than tennis matches . Yet following weeks of concern over her fitness, after she retired hurt just seven games into her opening match at Nottingham earlier this month, this was an impressive first outing on the most famous court in tennis. Handed a tough first-round draw against a dangerous opponent, ranked 47th in the world, Raducanu prevailed thanks to her frying-pan backhands and kitchen-sink forehands. Against the more physically-opposing and bigger-serving Belgian, Raducanu relied on … [Read more...] about Emma Raducanu survives tricky test to reach Wimbledon second round with straight sets win over Alison van Uytvanck

Keith Hernandez never wanted to come to New York and now he’s forever a Met: ‘Best thing that ever happened to me’
The man who could anticipate everything on the baseball diamond swears he didn’t see this coming. In fact, he thought it might never happen at all. Keith Hernandez was caught completely by surprise when the Mets announced that they would be retiring his number. The ceremony, set for July 9 at Citi Field, is a long overdue recognition for one of the team’s best players. For as long as there are the New York Mets, there will be a No. 17 plaque on display, making Hernandez immortal in a place he never wanted to be in the first place. “There was no excitement for coming to New York, because they were a last place team,” Hernandez says. Speaking over the phone from his backyard in California, Hernandez recalls the day in 1983 when he was traded from the Cardinals to the Mets. “It was a very sad day for me,” he admits. “I was a Cardinals fan as a kid. I came up in the ‘70s when New York was going bankrupt. It was kind of a dangerous town. I didn’t go out when we’d visit, I’d stay … [Read more...] about Keith Hernandez never wanted to come to New York and now he’s forever a Met: ‘Best thing that ever happened to me’
