Where we’re at: I’m recapping my summer of 2018, starting with June in New York City. In other news: sign ups are rolling in for the latest Wander Women Retreats. Egypt is waiting list only, but you can still join us in Florida! It’s official — I’m a yoga teacher! Graduating from my 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training at Y7 Studio last June felt like an incredibly transformative moment, something I’d been planting the seeds of for years. Making it work in my crazy schedule, committing to the financial investment, finding the right program… it took a lot of manifesting. Sitting down on my mat the first day, I couldn’t believe it was finally happening. And laying there on the final savasana of the last day, I couldn’t believe it was over. For those that are unfamiliar, the introductory course to become a yoga teacher is often referred to as the “200HR-RYT” — two hundred hours of instruction from a trainer and with a … [Read more...] about My Yoga Teacher Training Experience at Y7 Studios in New York • Alex in Wanderland

“Follow your dreams, sweetie.” I was sitting in Thailand, my on-and-off home for many years, texting with my mom about my next big dilemma. I’ve always been a terrible decision maker, endlessly waffling on choices big and small. This was a big one: I’d wanted to do my yoga teacher training for years, and the sensible thing would be to complete my RYT-200 hour, the immersive introductory training, somewhere affordable like, oh, say, the country I was currently living in. But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t seem to talk myself into doing my training in Thailand, or in India, or in Indonesia, or any of the other places people kept gushing to me about. My heart was calling me home. (Well, it was also calling me to Hawaii – basically, it was calling me to the US, either New York or Honolulu or LA, three of the most expensive and nonsensical places for this particular yogi to get her training on. But more on that in a future post.) My mom’s … [Read more...] about Why NY: How I Ended Up Back in the Big Apple • Alex in Wanderland
NEW YORK (AP) — Anna Sorokin traveled in celebrity circles and tossed $100 tips — all the more reason to believe she was the German heiress she said she was. But behind the jet-set lifestyle and pricey threads, prosecutors say, was a fraudster who bilked friends, banks and hotels for a taste of the high life. Sorokin, 28, lived in luxury New York City hotel rooms she couldn’t afford, promised a friend an all-expenses paid trip to Morocco and then stuck her with the $62,000 bill, and peddled bogus bank statements in a quest for a $22 million loan, the Manhattan District Attorney’s office alleges. On Wednesday, the one-time darling of the Big Apple social scene is scheduled to stand trial on grand larceny and theft of services charges alleging she swindled $275,000 in a 10-month odyssey that saw her jetting to Omaha and Marrakesh before landing in a cell at Rikers Island. “Her overall scheme has been to claim to be a wealthy German heiress with approximately … [Read more...] about A woman in New York City lived life as a German heiress. John Gallagher Detroit Free Press Published 6:00 AM EST Feb 20, 2019 So, did Amazon screw New York City, or was it the other way around? Opinion seems about evenly divided between those who blame Amazon for its divorce with New York and those who blame the city for blowing an enormous economic opportunity. As in any breakup, there’s a lot to be said for both sides. But overall I place more of the blame on Amazon for the collapse of the deal that could have brought some 25,000 new workers and billions in new investment to New York. If nothing else, the episode is a reminder that winning Amazon’s prized second headquarters, its HQ2, might not have been the unalloyed joy it once seemed, even for a city as desperate for growth as Detroit. More: It looks like Detroit was suckered by Amazon HQ2 move. Here's how To recap: After a yearlong contest, Amazon, based in Seattle, announced late last year it would split is much-sought-after second headquarters, or HQ2, between New … [Read more...] about Why Amazon gets the blame for collapse of HQ2 deal
