If history tells us anything, Sunday’s Patriots-Jets game is no automatic walkover. New England enters the contest as 9.5-point favorites, but the last five meetings in the Meadowlands have each been decided by one possession. There’s a level of familiarity between the two conference foes, which face off at least twice a year, but Patriots coach Bill Belichick said he’s not going to muddy things up just for the sake of throwing their opponent off on Sunday. “I don’t think we want to come in here and run the wishbone because they haven’t seen it before,” he said before practice at Gillette Stadium Friday. “We do what we do; they do what they do. You dress it up a little bit. But I mean, in the end, I don’t think this is the type of game that’s going to come down to a huge deception at the end of the game, where one team’s going to be sitting there saying, ‘Well, we’ve never really seen them do that before, … [Read more...] about What Bill Belichick had to say ahead of Sunday’s Patriots-Jets game
Patriots coach Bill Belichick caught part of Monday night’s epic showdown between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Los Angeles Rams, but his takeaway from the game had nothing to do with the two teams involved. “The Jets,” Belichick said Tuesday at Gillette Stadium. “That’s my takeaway.” Despite totaling a combined 105 points, the flashy offense from the Rams and Chiefs wasn’t enough for Belichick to stray from his typical approach to press conferences — one that’s often exclusively focused on New England’s next opponent. The Patriots visit the Jets Sunday after a bye week. “It’s always tough down there with the Jets, and I’m sure it will be again this time,” Belichick said. “The last five times we’ve gone down there, they’ll all been hard-fought games, close games. The Jets do a good job — really good — in all three phases of the game. It’s a team … [Read more...] about Bill Belichick’s takeaway from Chiefs-Rams is… the Jets?
The opening kickoff of Sunday’s Patriots-Titans game was a harbinger of the 34-10 beatdown that followed, according to coach Bill Belichick. Starting at Tennessee’s 2-yard line, Titans wide receiver Darius Jennings fielded a high-flying kick from Stephen Gostkowski and scurried into New England territory for a 58-yard gain. Three and a half minutes later, quarterback Marcus Mariota connected with tight end Jonnu Smith in the end zone to put the Titans up 7-0. “The play was pretty much symptomatic of the whole game,’’ Belichick said during a conference call Monday afternoon. “Bad coaching, bad playing, offense, defense, special teams, running game, passing game, kicking game. We just didn’t do a good enough job.’’ The Titans never relinquished their early lead and maintained a two-possession advantage for the duration of the second half. Belichick harbored much of the blame for the dismal outing, saying the poor performance started … [Read more...] about Patriots notebook: Bill Belichick says blame for loss begins with him
NASHVILLE — Malcolm Butler acknowledged it was strange seeing Bill Belichick on Sunday, but it had nothing to do with Super Bowl LII. “It was kind of weird. I hadn’t seen him in a long time in person!’’ Butler said after the Titans’ 34-10 win over the Patriots on Sunday. Butler said he caught up with Belichick both before and after Sunday’s game. It was the first time the two had been together since Butler was benched in February’s Super Bowl loss to the Eagles. Butler said all is good between he and Belichick, and said Sunday’s win was “most definitely not’’ personal. “He just told me good luck, keep fighting,’’ Butler said of their quick conversation after the game. “He appreciated the four years that we played together, and I told him the same.’’ But Butler didn’t ask Belichick why he didn’t play in the Super Bowl. “Nah, you know, he’s past that, just … [Read more...] about Malcolm Butler and Bill Belichick caught up before Sunday’s Patriots-Titans game
Patriots coach Bill Belichick had a lot to say during his team’s 31-17 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night. The latest episode of Showtime’s “Inside of the NFL” captured some of Belichick’s candid moments on the sidelines, including his congratulatory messages to running back James White after he rushed eight yards for New England’s first touchdown of the game — “That’s the way to get it in, bud, that’s the way to get it in” — and to quarterback Tom Brady after the Patriots took the lead in the fourth quarter — “Good job, Tommy.” When Brady connected with wide receiver Josh Gordon for a 55-yard touchdown to give the Patriots a two-possession lead midway through the fourth, his pass looked like it could have been intended for either Gordon or wide receiver Julian Edelman. So, Belichick asked him point blank: “Who were you throwing that to?” Brady said, … [Read more...] about Bill Belichick was mic’d up for Patriots-Packers
