Disney sees ‘blockbuster’ profits, ‘unfavorable attendance mix’ with Magic Key passholders
The message in Disney’s most recent earnings report was clear: The company is making more money than ever, but annual passholders are more of a liability than an asset — at least financially speaking. In the Walt Disney Company’s third quarter earnings report , released Aug. 10, the company reported a 50% increase in operating profit, to $3.6 billion, and a revenue increase of 26%, to $21.5 billion. The New York Times called it a “blockbuster quarterly earnings report,” in that it surpassed analyst predictions in everything, from new Disney Plus subscribers to theme park revenues. “Higher operating results for the quarter reflected increases at domestic parks and experiences,” the report read. “The increase in average per capita ticket revenue was due to the introduction of Genie+ and Lightning Lane in the first quarter of the current fiscal year and a reduced impact from promotions at Walt Disney World Resort,” it said later.
