Widow of Bloody Sunday victim awarded £625,000 in payout
THE widow of a man shot dead by a soldier on Bloody Sunday is to receive £625,000 in damages, the High Court heard yesterday.The settlement was reached in 80-year-old Ita McKinney's legal action over her husband Gerry's killing in Derry in January 1972.Mr McKinney, a 35-year-old a father-of-eight, was among 13 people shot dead when British Army paratroopers opened fire on civil rights demonstrators.One of the others wounded on the day died later.In a separate resolution, the brother of single man Michael McDaid, 20, is to receive £75,000 in damages for his death on Bloody Sunday.The outcomes follow last week's award of £193,000 compensation to Michael Quinn, who was shot in the face as a schoolboy by one of the soldiers.Yesterday's settlement came following a report in The Irish News voicing concerns by the family's solicitor over the Ministry of Defence's (MoD) handling of the case which had been adjourned last week because no settlement could be reached.Mr Justice … [Read more...] about Widow of Bloody Sunday victim awarded £625,000 in payout

John Lewis remained hospitalized Sunday afternoon for what was described as "routine observation" after he fell ill Saturday on a flight to Atlanta. The 78-year-old civil rights icon was on a flight from Detroit when he started feeling dizzy and sweaty, an aide said Saturday night. After being hospitalized in Atlanta, the Democrat’s office said in a statement Saturday evening that he was expected to be released Sunday. On Sunday afternoon, an update from the congressman's spokeswoman Brenda Jones said that he was "resting very comfortably and fully expects to be released very soon." The statement continued, "He is grateful for the concerns and well wishes of Georgians, colleagues, family and friends."
