Horse-trading suspected in village head term extension

January 25, 2023 by www.thejakartapost.com Leave a Comment

Fikri Harish (The Jakarta Post) PREMIUM Jakarta   ● Wed, January 25 2023 After thousands of village heads across Indonesia held a protest in front of the House of Representatives last week demanding a longer term in office, policymakers are signaling that they might agree to extend the tenure to nine years. But observers question the political motives behind the move, occurring as Indonesia enters a political year, and the risk to democracy it poses. Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician Budiman Sudjatmiko was quick to claim that President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo supported the idea of extending the tenure, saying that all that was left was to discuss the matter with the House, Kompas.com reported. He made the claim after meeting with Jokowi last week. Answering questions from reporters on Tuesday, Jokowi made no mention of supporting the extension, only that the authority lay with the House. “All aspirations should be communicated to the House, … [Read more...] about Horse-trading suspected in village head term extension

Indonesian banks take ESG approach with grain of salt

January 18, 2023 by www.thejakartapost.com Leave a Comment

(The Jakarta Post) PREMIUM Jakarta   ● Wed, January 18 2023 Indonesia’s banking sector is facing difficulties implementing the full spectrum of environmental, social and governance (ESG) standards, viewed as a bare minimum among investors from many advanced economies. While banks generally acknowledged that most international investors were concerned about ESG compliance in potential investments, they also realize the standards also catered to the “voices of stakeholders and regulators”, Indonesian Bankers Association (IBI) chairman Haryanto Tiara Budiman said on Wednesday. The government is pursuing a significant increase in investment this year to spur economic growth and to compensate for a projected slowdown in export earnings and household spending, with multiple financial institutions expecting spillover from a troubled global economy. to Read Full Story SUBSCRIBE NOW Starting from IDR 55,500/month Unlimited access to our web and app content … [Read more...] about Indonesian banks take ESG approach with grain of salt

Tunggul Wirajuda (The Jakarta Post) PREMIUM Jakarta   ● Thu, January 26, 2023 The sketch artists grouped in KamiSketsa 's capture the quieter, more tranquil sides to Jakarta and other cities that are often drowned out by the hustle and bustle of urban life across the nation. The Art Deco spires of the Metropole movie theater jut into the Jakarta skyline, its distinctive lines captured in Chinese ink and pen on paper in Megaria/Metropol by sketch artist Budiman. The drawing’s ethereal lines seem to convey an idealized, halcyon take of the historical Jakarta landmark from simpler days gone by, but a glance at its foreground shows otherwise. The row of gridlocked cars is an all too familiar sight, as is the motorcycle zipping past the quiet road in the opposite direction. to Read Full Story SUBSCRIBE NOW Starting from IDR 55,500/month Unlimited access to our web and app content e-Post daily digital newspaper No advertisements, no interruptions … [Read more...] about Bersama by KamiSketsa: Re-sketching Indonesia’s urban landscapes
