WASHINGTON (AP) — The federal government will allow Medicaid dollars to treat some people in prisons, jails or juvenile detention centers for the first time ever, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced Thursday. CMS will allow California inmates to access limited services, including substance use treatment and mental health diagnoses, 90 days before being released. Since Medicaid was established, federal law has prohibited Medicaid money from being used for people who are in custody, with inmates having access to their health care coverage suspended. The move will provide more stability for inmates and juvenile detainees as they exit institutions and reenter the outside world, CMS administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure said Thursday. She said the change will allow the state to “make unprecedented advancements for incarcerated individuals who have long been underserved.” At least 10 other states have asked CMS for exemptions to use Medicaid dollars to treat … [Read more...] about California prison inmates to get some Medicaid care

California mass shootings show limits of strict state gun laws
AR-15 style rifles are displayed for sale at Firearms Unknown, a gun store in Oceanside, California, U.S., April 12, 2021. REUTERS FILE PHOTO In a span of less than 72 hours, a massacre at a Monterey Park dance studio and a killing spree at two farms in Half Moon Bay left California in anguish. One man carried out his attack with a gun banned by the state, while the other used a gun he legally owned, police said. The twin attacks, which left 18 people dead, once again drew attention to the patchwork of laws and court rulings that have frustrated efforts to make deadly mass shootings less frequent in the United States. Even California’s gun laws, some of the country’s strictest, can be sidestepped. “It does illustrate the challenges of regulating state by state when firearms are so easily carried across state lines,” said J. Adam Skaggs, chief counsel at the gun safety group Giffords Law Center. Prospects for new federal gun laws are dim. Congress last year passed the first … [Read more...] about California mass shootings show limits of strict state gun laws

Third Trader Joe’s store votes to unionize
A Trader Joe’s store in Louisville, Kentucky, has become the grocery chain's third to vote to unionize. Workers at the store voted 48-36 in favor of the union Thursday evening, according to the National Labor Relations Board, which conducted the election. Workers from the Louisville store will now join workers from two other unionized Trader Joe's stores at the bargaining table, where they are trying to hammer out a new labor agreement. In July, a Trader Joe’s in Hadley, Massachusetts, was the first in the country to unionize; a store in Minneapolis unionized in August. The unionization effort at Trader Joe's comes amid a larger wave of organizing largely led by younger workers. Employees have unionized hundreds of Starbucks stores over the last year, as well as Apple stores and an Amazon warehouse. But the union hasn’t convinced workers at every Trader Joe's store where it has campaigned. A Trader Joe’s in Brooklyn, New York, voted against unionizing in October. And the … [Read more...] about Third Trader Joe’s store votes to unionize
