A San Jose man was charged with distribution of fentanyl in federal court this week after he allegedly sold pills laced with the lethal drug, causing a fatal overdose. Federal prosecutors say Ian Edward Parrish, 28, sold two counterfeit Percocet pills to a person at a bar in Fremont, who later died from an overdose after consuming one of the pills, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Parrish was charged with one count of distribution of fentanyl, which carries a maximum of 20 years in prison, a $250,000 and a three years of supervised release, according to the release. Prosecutors did not charge him with homicide. The defendant was ordered detained and will next appear in federal court on March 21 for a status conference. U.S. Attorney Evan M. Mateer is prosecuting the case with Katrina Ruiz. Parrish’s defense attorneys were not named in the release. It was unclear when the alleged purchase occurred or when Parrish was arrested. The prosecution followed a … [Read more...] about Feds charge San Jose man for selling fentanyl-laced pills that caused fatal overdose

BART, Muni, Caltrain would be big winners in Democrats’ COVID stimulus bill
Congressional Democrats’ $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief bill includes money for transit agencies reeling from lost revenue, and that could mean a major boost for BART, Muni and Caltrain. But the set-asides have also drawn fire from Republicans who oppose the bill and are trying to cast it as stuffed with pork, portraying the Bay Area funds — particularly for BART’s long-planned extension into downtown San Jose and Santa Clara — as a Democratic giveaway. Besides the BART extension, the House version of the stimulus bill includes money to expand the Transbay Tube’s capacity for BART trains, the conversion of Caltrain to electric power and Muni’s delayed Central Subway to Chinatown. The $6.9 billion Silicon Valley extension would complete the decades-long dream of connecting the Bay Area’s regional rail transit system to the South Bay. It would travel 6 miles — including 5 miles in a subway beneath downtown San Jose that would have three stations — before ending in downtown Santa … [Read more...] about BART, Muni, Caltrain would be big winners in Democrats’ COVID stimulus bill
UK airports fail to make top 100 rankings as post-pandemic struggle continues
The best airports in the world have been announced - and the UK's travel hubs are no where to be seen, while Brazil has flourished. Each year AirHelp , the world's largest air passenger rights organisation, produce a global ranking of airports, based on time performance, quality of service, and what passengers think about them. At the top of the pile this year is Tokyo Haneda International Airport , which received an overall score of 8.83 and was praised for how smooth an experience passengers' enjoy, and how much they love the travel hub. The bad news for British and European flyers more broadly is that of the 151 airports analysed, only five in Europe made it into the top 50. ( Image: LIVERPOOL ECHO) British airports perform particularly poorly, with four of the 10 worst airports are located in Great Britain, specifically all in England Despite being major travel hubs, London Heathrow, London Gatwick, Birmingham and Edinburgh airports all failed to make it in … [Read more...] about UK airports fail to make top 100 rankings as post-pandemic struggle continues
Here’s when rain will return to the SF Bay Area
Under clear blue skies, the San Francisco Bay Area has been bathed by the sun in recent days, and these dry conditions are expected to persist into Saturday afternoon. Saturday night marks the start of yet another rainy spell that will likely continue into Wednesday, with a weak cold front and an atmospheric river forecast to hit in the coming days. While atmospheric rivers are known for dumping heavy rain, the Bay Area may be spared in this upcoming event, with weather models suggesting the system will be focused over Southern California , the National Weather Service said. The dry weather has been a much-welcome break from the rain amid an unusually wet winter. Some clouds moved into the region early Friday but scattered by late morning. Conditions will remain fair this afternoon, with highs in the 60s — except right near the ocean, where temperatures could stay in the 50s. Saturday afternoon is expected to be even warmer. "Most of the Bay Area will be in the 60s on … [Read more...] about Here’s when rain will return to the SF Bay Area
Will the Bay Area hit 70 degrees? These areas will get the warmest before rain returns
The Bay Area is in the final stretch of a warm, dry weather pattern that’s been over the region since Wednesday . Temperatures are forecast to climb as momentum builds in the atmosphere right before Sunday’s cooldown . Saturday will be full of daytime highs in the upper 60s. A few places may reach the 70-degree mark, depending on a few factors. Those factors include sunshine, humidity, wind speeds and the longer days of spring. All of them will play a role in determining whether any Bay Area cities break into the 70s. Back to the 70s This rush of warm, dry air is a welcome phenomenon for the Bay Area and most of Northern California’s valleys. Soils recently saturated by rainfall and snowmelt have seen some of that excess moisture evaporate. Runoff in the mountains has been able to flow back out to sea since Wednesday without interruptions. Saturday morning and afternoon will be no exception as warm air raises daytime temperatures to the upper 60s across most of the region. … [Read more...] about Will the Bay Area hit 70 degrees? Despite tech layoffs and remote work, Silicon Valley’s economy not in ‘crisis’ mode
Silicon Valley is a region in flux, but one that maintains strong economic underpinnings, despite layoffs, the pandemic and the dramatic increase in working from home, according to an annual report from Joint Venture Silicon Valley , a nonprofit business and community group. “There is no way we can construe this as a crisis,” Russell Hancock, the group’s CEO, said in a press briefing on Tuesday about the Silicon Valley Index. “The only way we can accurately depict this is as an adjustment.” The report defines Silicon Valley as the counties of San Mateo and Santa Clara, plus Fremont, Newark and Union City in Alameda County, and Scotts Valley in Santa Cruz County. That sets up a contrast between it and that other local center of the tech industry: San Francisco. Silicon Valley — which obviously is larger both in geographic area and in population — has 9.6% of California’s jobs and 13.1% of the state’s gross domestic product, versus 4.1% and 5.9% in San Francisco, respectively, … [Read more...] about Despite tech layoffs and remote work, Silicon Valley’s economy not in ‘crisis’ mode
