Cape fear valley health

In deep-red corner of Arizona, threat of losing water starts to outweigh fear of regulation

February 4, 2023 by edition.cnn.com Leave a Comment

By Ella Nilsen , CNN Updated 0902 GMT (1702 HKT) February 4, 2023 Kingman, Arizona (CNN) Driving along county roads that are little more than dirt paths, Tim Walsh remarked that the expansive valley below the Long Mountain range used to be no more than tumbleweeds and scraggly cactuses. Now, it's pistachio trees as far as the eye can see. Far from mature, the pistachio saplings are just a few feet tall. The trees were planted for "miles and miles, clear up to the base of the mountain," said Walsh, a lifelong Kingman resident and head of Mohave County's Department of Development Services. Over the past decade, the vast desert area around the 33,000-person city of Kingman has been transformed into an agricultural enclave. Green alfalfa fields were first planted below the mountains, then eventually replaced with thirsty pistachio trees. But as those farms grow, county and city officials fear the groundwater -- their only source of water -- is not capable of supporting … [Read more...] about In deep-red corner of Arizona, threat of losing water starts to outweigh fear of regulation

Meet the ‘Chopped’ champion chef trying to throw a weed event in Napa Valley

March 22, 2023 by www.sfgate.com Leave a Comment

Putting a heady twist on the age-old wisdom that you should always “eat your greens,” Bay Area chef Solomon Johnson is bringing marijuana to high-end cuisine. All of the courses at his new Cannescape event series are infused with cannabis. The Bay Area's first winner of "Chopped 420," a "Chopped" spinoff from Discovery+, Johnson cooks up food that is both delicious and pleasantly stoning — I attended the first Cannescape event at the Phoenix Hotel in San Francisco last month. The multiday events include a five-course dinner infused with cannabis, as well as an overnight stay at a premier Northern California hotel. Dr. Wilkinson’s Backyard Resort & Mineral Springs in Napa Valley is scheduled to host the next event April 20 , otherwise known as 4/20 — fitting for the "Chopped 420" champion. However, these blissed-out banquets may have already landed Johnson in some hot water. The San Francisco Department of Public Health has warned the Phoenix that the pot-infused dinner I … [Read more...] about Meet the ‘Chopped’ champion chef trying to throw a weed event in Napa Valley

Deadly radioactive cylinder MISSING from power plant in highly populated tourist hotspot sparking frantic drone search

March 16, 2023 by www.thesun.co.uk Leave a Comment

A DEADLY radioactive cylinder has disappeared from a power plant in a highly populated tourist hotspot, sparking a frantic drone search. Staff at the coal-fired plant in Thailand 's Prachinbri province noticed the 12-inch steel tube was missing during routine checks on Friday. The public were warned that it poses serious health risks if they come into contact with it and they should alert authorities immediately. The metal cylinder, used for measuring ash, is packed full of Caesium-137, making it dangerously radioactive. The substance is commonly used to calibrate radiation gauges but can wreak havoc on humans who come into contact with it. It is not clear how much Caesium-137 is inside the missing tube, which was part of a silo at the power plant 60 miles east of Bangkok. How Colorado banks compare to the financial institutions that just failed

March 22, 2023 by www.denverpost.com Leave a Comment

The government takeover of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank has bank customers large and small on edge. And while the banks failed for different reasons, the combination of a rapid rise in interest rates and high levels of uninsured deposits has also put stress on banks in Colorado and everywhere else. “The recent bank closures in California and New York appear to be outliers and not reflective of the norm for banks across the United States and Colorado. The California bank had significant concentrations of tech and venture capital clients while the N.Y. bank had a significant concentration of cryptocurrency clients,” the Colorado Bankers Association said last week in a statement. A research paper by finance professors Erica Jiang, Gregor Matvos, Tomasz Piskorski and Amit Seru, however, estimates that the nation’s banks are sitting on $2 trillion in unrealized losses in their investment portfolios because of higher interest rates and that 186 more banks could fail if they … [Read more...] about How Colorado banks compare to the financial institutions that just failed

The future of going to a museum: As social distancing sticks around, how will we enjoy art and science?

April 29, 2020 by www.denverpost.com Leave a Comment

By Linnea Covington , Special to The Denver Post Like so many institutions and businesses, Colorado’s 300-plus museums also face a vague and uncertain future when they reopen. However, like many individuals and businesses, these venues are finding new ways to connect in the now and plan for when things start up again. “For us one of the real discoveries of the stay-at-home orders has been the relative ease with which we can deliver a range of content to our audience’s home devices, and the audience’s willingness to participate in online programming,” said Dean Sobel, founding director of the Clyfford Still Museum . “This has included both new live programs but also, I think, very good content we created several years ago that we had considered ‘archived,’ but we now see as highly relevant in this new world.” Art, history, artifact and other museums of all sizes across the state have suffered, both from loss of ticket revenue and the money they make by hosting events and … [Read more...] about The future of going to a museum: As social distancing sticks around, how will we enjoy art and science?
