Laid-off employees were notified in one-on-one meetings, according to a company-wide message. “While some of you will be impacted, all of you will be affected,” Calm CEO David Ko said in the message Thursday. “I can assure you that this was not an easy decision, but it is especially difficult for a company like ours whose mission is focused on workplace mental health and wellness.” Calm, like direct competitor Headspace and digital therapy services like BetterHelp and Talkspace, capitalized on the recent uptick in demand for mental health care and wellness — a demand that was only intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic. Luxury San Francisco high-rise 33 Tehama sees second major flood
A second flood has coursed through 33 Tehama, the troubled luxury high-rise building that had already experienced a "catastrophic" flood on June 3. There were some residents in the building at the time, packing up belongings and picking up mail, and those present were forced to evacuate. In a complaint to San Francisco's Department of Building Inspection, a caller to 311 described the situation. “There is water flow in the elevator shafts. It is visible.” One video posted on Twitter showed water dripping from the ceiling of an elevator, while in another, two workers exit the building as water rushes out. 33 Tehama elevators are flooded again meaning tenants are unable to move their stuff out. Everything You Need to Know About San Marzano Tomatoes
Many believe that San Marzano tomatoes are the best-canned tomatoes in the world. They even refer to San Marzanos as the crème de la crème – the standard we use to judge other tomatoes. Back then, it was not easy to lay your hands on them; these days, you can find some varieties on most supermarket shelves. Both chefs, home cooks, and culinary enthusiasts around the world know these Italian tomatoes for their sweet taste and subtle acidity that matches perfectly with cheese and rich meats. But is the San Marzano tomato worth the hype? What are San Marzano Tomatoes? The name “San Marzano” refers to a particular kind of tomato in a specific area in Italy. One stunning photo shows how the last supermoon of 2022 lit up the S.F. skyline
The last dazzling supermoon of 2022 slipped across the Bay Area sky Thursday night, giving nighttime observers a chance to witness a celestial phenomenon that won’t happen again until next summer. Supermoons occur at times when the moon’s orbit brings it especially close to the earth, making it appear larger and brighter to observers on the earth. On average, supermoons occur when the moon gets within about 228,420 miles from earth, according to Fred Espenak , a retired NASA astrophysicist who runs a website and blog dedicated to astronomy. Thursday night’s supermoon could also be referred to as a Sturgeon Moon, since it was August’s full moon, and the last full moon of summer. Chronicle photographer Carlos Avila Gonzalez captured this year’s last supermoon brushing Coit Tower in San Francisco, while the lights of the Bay Bridge glittered in the background. The next supermoon, according to Espenak, will be visible on July 3, 2023 — clear skies permitting. Which US City Has the Highest Taxes For Tourists?
An obnoxious reality where travel is involved, tourists taxes actually serve a pretty important purpose. For the uninitiated, tourists taxes are small fees levied on travelers, usually by way of accommodations, to help mitigate the effects of tourism and, more importantly, help curb overtourism. Which is why it should come as a surprise to none that the most expensive city in the world when it comes to tourist taxes is none other than Honolulu. Per new data from Money.co.uk , the Hawaiian capital is number one when it comes to premium tourist taxes, costing travelers roughly $361.93 for a seven night stay, or $51.70 a night. That’s because, on top of the 10.25% “transient accommodations tax” (TOT) Hawaii charges, the city of Honolulu has added a 3% surcharge. In second place comes San Francisco, which, too, charges a large TOT of 14% on stays under 30 days. Those looking to stay for seven nights in the Bay Area can plan to pay $207.29 in tourist tax alone, per room, or … [Read more...] about Which US City Has the Highest Taxes For Tourists?

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 California’s top environmental regulator is stepping down at the end of the month, leaving the task of confronting climate change and pollution under Gov. Gavin Newsom to a respected environmental justice advocate. Jared Blumenfeld, a seasoned policy guru and San Francisco resident who was tapped by the Newsom administration to serve as secretary for environmental protection four years ago, said he’s vacating his post to run a new billion-dollar climate foundation launched by Laurene Powell Jobs, widow of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. More environment news: Why California may be at a dramatically higher risk of catastrophic ‘megafloods’ than ever before “Frankly, I love working for government, and the scale of what we’ve been able to do is huge,” Blumenfeld told The Chronicle. However, he said, the opportunity to work outside of the bureaucratic red tape on climate issues … [Read more...] about California’s top environmental regulator leaves to join ‘one of the biggest climate funds in the world’
Why California may be at a dramatically higher risk of catastrophic ‘megafloods’ than ever before
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 4 The one-day deluge that soaked San Francisco in 4 inches of rain last October, is just a damp teaser of what is coming when it rains torrentially off and on for 30 days, according to a harrowing study released Friday. As much as 60 inches of rain (not snow) in a warming Sierra Nevada storm could wash down the delta and flood every river and stream in the Bay Area. The rising waters could then meet with a coastal storm surge that raises the level of San Francisco Bay by several feet to wash out low-lying roadways and overwhelm urban areas from the East Bay to San Jose. These are the inferences from a research article in the journal Science Advances that was published under the headline “Climate change is increasing the risk of a California megaflood,” by UCLA climate scientist Daniel Swain and colleague Xingying Huang of the National Center for Atmospheric Research. “The … [Read more...] about Why California may be at a dramatically higher risk of catastrophic ‘megafloods’ than ever before
