Sam Rainsy (The Jakarta Post) PREMIUM Paris ● Wed, January 25 2023 Indonesia’s chairmanship of ASEAN this year offers an opportunity to move beyond the sterile process of running down the clock witnessed under Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen in 2022. ASEAN failed to achieve anything in regard to the illegitimate military junta in Myanmar last year as Hun Sen simply waited to hand the problem over to someone else. Hun Sen and his representatives failed to meet with National League for Democracy (NLD) leader Aung San Suu Kyi or any representative of the National Unity Government (NUG), which represents the will of the vast majority of Myanmar’s people. Hun Sen looked on in passive acquiescence as Suu Kyi was sentenced to 33 years in prison, including three years of hard labor. The ASEAN doctrine of noninterference to which Hun Sen enthusiastically subscribes makes such monstrous behavior by Myanmar’s junta possible. to Read Full Story SUBSCRIBE NOW … [Read more...] about Indonesia can help repair ASEAN’s authoritarian drift

Activists call on Indonesia to put Rohingya refugees in ASEAN spotlight
A. Muh. Ibnu Aqil (The Jakarta Post) PREMIUM Jakarta ● Sun, January 15, 2023 Rights activists are calling on Indonesia, which has received over 600 Rohingya refugees in recent weeks, to make use of its ASEAN chairmanship this year to address the issue. Executive director Atika Yuanita Paraswaty of SUAKA, or the Indonesian Civil Society Association for Refugee Rights Protection, said that it should be lauded that the people of Aceh had been relatively welcoming to the Rohingya refugees who had landed in the province. She said that while a 2016 presidential regulation facilitated Indonesia’s treatment of refugee arrivals, more needed to be done. to Read Full Story SUBSCRIBE NOW Starting from IDR 55,500/month Unlimited access to our web and app content e-Post daily digital newspaper No advertisements, no interruptions Privileged access to our events and programs Subscription to our newsletters We accept Register to read … [Read more...] about Activists call on Indonesia to put Rohingya refugees in ASEAN spotlight

Elon Musk Says He’d Sell SpaceX Stock To Take Tesla Private In 2018
(CTN News) – Tesla CEO Elon Musk said he could have taken Tesla private in 2018 by selling shares of SpaceX. At the time, and still today, he was both the company’s CEO and its largest shareholder. In a series of tweets Musk wrote in August 2018, he said that he had “funding secured” to take Tesla private for $420 per share, and that “investor support” had been “confirmed.” After his tweets, Tesla stock was suspended, and its share price remained volatile for weeks. Class action shareholders claim Elon Musk tweets were reckless and false, and relying on his statements to make investment decisions cost them significant amounts of money. Based on a handshake, Elon Musk claimed that Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund had verbally committed to his price, and he was sure the funding would come through. It never came to fruition, however. Musk said on his second day on the witness stand that another reason he said he had “funding secured” for the deal in 2018 was his … [Read more...] about Elon Musk Says He’d Sell SpaceX Stock To Take Tesla Private In 2018

DAILY MAIL COMMENT: West must hold its nerve to thwart Vladimir Putin
‘For the want of a nail, the kingdom was lost.’ Even children can understand the meaning of the proverb: That seemingly unimportant acts or omissions can have grave and unforeseen consequences. At long, long last, Western leaders seem to have got the message. Amid mounting pressure to follow Britain‘s lead, Germany and the US – followed by other Nato allies – have overcome their reluctance to supply modern battle tanks to Ukraine. This diplomatic breakthrough, after months of dithering and false excuses, may be a major turning point in this bloody war. The machines – pledged after a powerful rallying cry by Boris Johnson in the Mail – should help Ukrainian troops repel a planned huge spring offensive by Russia and then, God willing, drive the invaders into a full-blown retreat. Ultimately, that is the only way to end this terrible conflict. DAILY MAIL COMMENT: At long, long last, Western leaders seem to have got the message.
