The Ugandan parliament has passed a bill setting out jail terms of up to 10 years for offences related to same-sex relationships, forcing rights groups to condemn the legislation as 'appalling'. The Bill was passed late on Tuesday inside a packed parliamentary chamber in the capital Kampala. A roll call was ordered by the House speaker who had repeatedly warned it was necessary to identify those who might oppose the legislation. It was supported by nearly all of the 389 legislators present. Speaker Anita Among said: 'Congratulations. Whatever we are doing, we are doing it for the people of Uganda.' An earlier version of the Bill enacted in 2014 was later nullified by a court on procedural grounds. The east African country is notorious for its intolerance of homosexuality - which was criminalised under colonial-era laws. Amnesty International subsequently urged Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni to veto the anti-gay bill, warning it was 'a grave assault' on LGBTQ people. In Hong Kong, a New Exhibit Creates a ‘Space for People to Feel’
HONG KONG — Michele Chu has always been interested in exploring the intimacy between strangers. She has built art installations with fabric barriers and designed social experiments eliciting public participation, and intended to base her upcoming exhibition at the contemporary gallery PHD Group — her debut solo show — on the cleansing rituals at a bathhouse. But the work became more raw and personal when, a few months ago, her mother applied to receive euthanasia after a protracted battle with cancer. The exhibit, “ You, Trickling ,” is about anticipating the loss of a maternal figure. It also explores how rituals and a renewed connection with one’s own body might facilitate healing. Ms. Chu brings the hot air, mist and steam reminiscent of an onsen, a Japanese communal bathhouse, into the sprawling 3,000-square-foot gallery space of PHD Group, which she divides with fabric into womblike chambers and tunnels. “On a city-level, there is an undercurrent of loss everywhere,” she … [Read more...] about In Hong Kong, a New Exhibit Creates a ‘Space for People to Feel’

A Kansas proposal based on the disputed idea that providers leave newborns to die after unsuccessful abortions is nearing legislative approval, as Republicans pursue limited anti-abortion measures following a decisive statewide vote last year protecting abortion rights. The Kansas House was set to take a final vote Wednesday on a bill declaring that when an abortion procedure inadvertently results in a live birth, medical personnel must take the same steps to preserve the newborn's life as "a reasonably diligent and conscientious" provider would with other live births. The measure is similar to a proposed Montana law that voters there rejected in November. The U.S. Supreme Court declared in June that states can ban abortion, and the Republican-controlled Kansas Legislature has long had strong anti-abortion … [Read more...] about Kansas House set to vote on ‘born-alive infant protection’ bill
