Rescue Mission reserves housing for graduates of ‘academy’

· October 8, 2019 ·

The San Diego Rescue Mission no longer has clients in its program.Starting this month, it has students in its academy, and everyone living in the facility will be either enrolled in — or will have graduated from — its courses designed to create sober, stable self-sufficient lives.“The key to the homeless issue is rehabilitation,” said Donnie Dee, president and CEO of the San Diego Rescue Mission in downtown San Diego.Dee said the new approach is intended to better address the needs of homeless people. Shortly after arriving as new head of the nonprofit in August 2017, Dee rewrote what he thought was a too-wordy mission statement to one that now reads: “To lovingly address the needs of men, women and children experiencing homelessness by sharing the good news of salvation and providing a holistic approach to rehabilitation and recovery.” He also made staffing changes, moving Jeremy Dawsey-Richardson from director of the mission’s recuperative … [Read more...] about Rescue Mission reserves housing for graduates of ‘academy’

Heading south in Steinbeck’s footsteps, with a Prius and a plan

· October 4, 2019 ·

Soon the beauty of fall will be gone, the festive holidays a memory. The snow will have outstayed its welcome, and the world outside will be pale and cold. For those of us in the Mountain West, February, the shortest month, can be 28 long days of despair. That’s when the road south calls.I heard the call while reading “The Log from the Sea of Cortez,” John Steinbeck’s account of cruising the sea in a sardine boat, dropping anchor in Mexican villages and collecting marine specimens along the way.I didn’t have a boat, but I did have a Prius. And a plan. I would set out from my home near Denver, steering a course south into Arizona to investigate a strangely lush canyon, then head into Mexico to explore the driest place in North America and finally alight on the Sea of Cortez. It all seemed a world away as I motored down icy Interstate 25, hugging the eastern side of the Rocky Mountains through sprawling Colorado Springs, gritty Pueblo and charming Trinidad, … [Read more...] about Heading south in Steinbeck’s footsteps, with a Prius and a plan

A dog-friendly holiday in the New Forest (with Shorefield)

· October 4, 2019 ·

We had just returned from Gozo having (only just!) survived a blistering 40-degree heatwave and we were asked to try a staycation in the New Forest in a pet-friendly lodge on the edge of the New Forest. I wasn’t going to say no – having travelled to France with my beloved rescue dog Rosa last year I’m now always looking to travel more and more with her if and when I can. The New Forest is one of England’s most popular holiday destinations and with good reason. It’s a wild and romantic place covering over 220 square miles of mainly open heathland, dotted with gorse and bracken and home to wildlife such as deer, otters, owls and more famously the semi-wild New Forest ponies. Dating back from 1079, the area was originally William the Conqueror’s game reserve and apparently he fiercely protected his beloved hunting land. Our home for the week was to be a luxury lodge set in landscaped parkland in the family, and pet, friendly Shorefield Country … [Read more...] about A dog-friendly holiday in the New Forest (with Shorefield)

Face it: This Patriots’ offense isn’t good enough

· October 9, 2019 ·

Does anyone think the Patriots’ offense can keep up with the Chiefs or Texans right now? I sure don’t. ■  The Patriots were lucky they were playing a Triple A offense and a Giants coach too afraid to take any chances. The Patriots’ defense had yet another dominant performance, forcing four turnovers and scoring a touchdown. They forced three Daniel Jones interceptions, and their only hiccup came on a 64-yard touchdown to Golden Tate, who beat tight coverage by Jonathan Jones on a deep fade then burned Duron Harmon to the end zone. Of course, the defense is going to look great when Saquon Barkley, Wayne Gallman, Evan Engram, and Sterling Shepard are all out with injuries. The Patriots’ defense can keep carrying them in these games against bad offenses. But in November and December, the Patriots will finally play some real quarterbacks, and won’t be able to count on the defense scoring points and forcing four turnovers every week. As for … [Read more...] about Face it: This Patriots’ offense isn’t good enough
