Phoebe Wall Howard Detroit Free Press Published 7:12 AM EDT Oct 1, 2019 Ford Motor Co. announced early Tuesday it has inked a deal with Mahindra & Mahindra to "create a joint venture that will develop, market and distribute Ford brand vehicles in India and Ford brand and Mahindra brand vehicles in high-growth emerging markets around the world." Mahindra, which has offices in Auburn Hills, will own a 51% controlling stake, a Ford news release said. "Ford will transfer its India operations to the joint venture, including its personnel and assembly plants in Chennai and Sanand. Ford will retain the Ford engine plant operations in Sanand as well as the Global Business Services unit, Ford Credit and Ford Smart Mobility." Mahindra is India’s largest utility vehicle maker. This is all part of an $11 billion restructuring plan launched by Ford CEO Jim Hackett, who took the helm of the company in 2017.
