Thousands of people prepared to descend on Paris on Sunday (Oct 6) to protest a government plan to let single women and lesbians become pregnant with fertility treatments, the first major social reform since France legalised gay marriage in 2013. IVF treatment is currently only available to heterosexual couples in France. Ecuador appears to be at a dangerous impasse after days of escalating protests and clashes.President Lenín Moreno has moved his administration out of the capital, alleging he is the target of a coup attempt.But Moreno so far has the military’s support and isn’t backing down from his decision to cut fuel subsidies, causing hikes in fuel prices. The unrest has spread from transport workers to indigenous demonstrators.Moreno said Monday that Ecuador’s government faces security threats and will operate from the port city of Guayaquil instead of Quito, the capital. Thousands of Algerians are protesting in front of their parliament against a bill aimed at attracting foreign investment to the oil and gas sector, which underpins the national economy.Surrounded by police, protesters raised their fists and accused the government of selling out Algeria’s resources and threatening their children’s futures.The bill has further angered anti-democracy protesters who have been demonstrating since February.The government is discussing the bill Sunday. A Japanese man who stepped out of his Paris hotel for a cigarette was robbed of his US$840,000 Swiss watch by a thief who snatched it off his wrist, police sources said Tuesday (Oct 8). The thief made off with a Richard Mille Tourbillon Diamond Twister. The thief then grabbed the man's arm and fled with the rare Richard Mille timepiece, a Tourbillon Diamond Twister estimated to cost some 770,000 euros.
