Trump calls climate activists ‘perennial prophets of doom’ during Davos economic forum

January 21, 2020 by edition.cnn.com Leave a Comment

Davos, Switzerland (CNN) President Donald Trump attacked climate activists as "perennial prophets of doom" on Tuesday while addressing the World Economic Forum , in Davos, Switzerland, where the agenda is focused on tackling the climate crisis. Trump's remarks underscored the chasm between his denialist view of climate change and the overwhelming scientific consensus driving the rest of the developed world to action. Speaking shortly after the teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg accused world leaders of not taking action, Trump rejected calls for urgent action and encouraged the world to instead embrace "optimism." Trump sets off for Davos just as Senate impeachment trial heats up "To embrace the possibilities of tomorrow, we must reject the perennial prophets of doom and their predictions of the apocalypse," Trump said. "They are the errors of yesterday's fortune tellers and we have them and I have them and they want to see us do … [Read more...] about Trump calls climate activists ‘perennial prophets of doom’ during Davos economic forum

Microsoft wants to eradicate its carbon footprint by going emissions ‘negative’ by 2030

January 16, 2020 by edition.cnn.com Leave a Comment

San Francisco (CNN Business) Microsoft is making an ambitious commitment to eliminate its carbon footprint by pledging to go "carbon negative" in the next decade and investing $1 billion to help develop clean technologies. The tech giant said Thursday it will seek to remove more carbon than it emits by 2030. "While the world will need to reach net zero, those of us who can afford to move faster and go further should do so," Microsoft's president Brad Smith said in a statement. The company's plan involves cutting its carbon emissions — projected to be around 16 million metric tons this year — by more than half, both in its own operations and across its supply chain. "We will fund this in part by expanding our internal carbon fee," added Smith, referring to the $15-per-metric-ton tax that all of Microsoft's business units pay based on their emissions. Misery for drivers as ULEZ could be EXTENDED even further and cover whole of London under new plans

May 20, 2022 by www.thesun.co.uk Leave a Comment

DRIVERS in London face fresh misery after it was revealed the city's much-loathed Ultra Low Emission Zone could soon be extended to every street. Mayor Sadiq Khan has declared war on motorists , insisting the capital needs to charge whopping fees so it hits climate-change targets. Under his plans, the scheme's boundary could be extended from the North and South Circular Roads to the whole of Greater London from August 29 next year. Drivers who don't comply with minimum emissions standards are charged a daily fee of £12.50 for entering the zone. That's separate from the £15 congestion charge , which must also be paid daily for vehicles travelling through the city centre. Analysis by the PA news agency found that more than 3.5million more people will live within the zone if it is expanded as planned. Read more on Motors RIGHT LIGHT? Charles Leclerc takes pole for Spanish GP while Lewis Hamilton will start in SIXTH behind Mercedes team-mate

May 21, 2022 by www.thesun.co.uk Leave a Comment

CHARLES LECLERC took pole for tomorrow's Spanish Grand Prix with a last-gasp flying lap. Max Verstappen had set a provisional pole time with a cracking first run while championship leader Leclerc spun on his maiden attempt. But the Ferrari man made up for it on his second attempt with a blistering run that eventually proved to be 0.323 quicker than the Red Bull man, who did have some power problems. Carlos Sainz qualified in third place as he strung together some clean laps while Mercedes were encouraged by George Russell 's fourth place start. The Silver Arrows had looked much-improved after a terrible start to the season and Russell's performance, with team-mate Lewis Hamilton starting in sixth behind Sergio Perez, will give them more reasons to feel optimistic. Meanwhile, Haas were left delighted after both Kevin Magnussen and Mick Schumacher reached the top 10 - despite the team bringing no upgrades to this race. THE “laminated book of dreams” used to be your Argos catalogue. It’s where you’d find a cheap toaster or an air bed or an Elizabeth Duke necklace for your first love. But now it’s going up in the world because Merc’s car range is so vast, it needs its own glossy book to fit them all in. I’ve just sat here and counted 84 different models on sale today — 84 — and that’s before you start mucking about with trims and engines. Then you’re talking 360-plus. It’s mad. The car you see here is model No85, the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe. Yes, really. Rubbish name — so I’m going to call it the 4GT from now on — but oh my days, what a car. In full assault mode, this four-seat family supercar will do 0-62mph in just 3.2 seconds and keep on charging all the way up to 196mph. LEWIS HAMILTON was reportedly left "astonished" after it emerged controversial former race director Michael Masi could return to Formula One. Masi, 44, was at the centre of a storm following last season's dramatic finale in Abu Dhabi which saw Max Verstappen pip Hamilton to the drivers' championship. He was subsequently sacked from the role , but has remained on the FIA's payroll. And last week FIA chief Mohammed ben Sulayem hinted the Australian could return to the sport in some capacity. He said: "I didn't get rid of Michael. He had a personal overload (of work) - safety delegate as well as race director. "He made a mistake. It is not as if we said it is the end of Masi with the FIA." Eurovision sensation Sam Ryder’s rise from juice bar owner to TikTok star

May 15, 2022 by www.mirror.co.uk Leave a Comment

He’s the singer that has turned around England’s Eurovision fortunes after 25 years. For the first time since 1998 the UK placed in the top five, with his track Space Man light years ahead of the competition in the jury votes. And while the huge public vote for Ukraine may have knocked him into second place, Sam is coming home from Turin, Italy, having won the UK something much more valuable than a trophy: he’s given us back some Eurovision pride. But how did it come to be that a long-haired 32-year-old Essex lad would turn out to be the knight in shining armour? The one who could finally rescue us from Eurovision derision? It’s certainly been quite the quest for the former Catholic school boy. Sam has always loved rock music ( Image: AFP via Getty Images) Born Sam Robinson, he grew up in Maldon, Essex. While at John Payne Catholic School in nearby Chelmsford, he found an old Iron Maiden album while on a school trip to a nunnery. Aged 11, he and his … [Read more...] about Eurovision sensation Sam Ryder’s rise from juice bar owner to TikTok star
