Between financially helping his parents and losing income as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Jeremy Mazza landed into serious credit card debt. Relief came from a source he wasn’t expecting: his partner, Ginna Lambert, who had come into a small inheritance. She suggested “investing” part of her bounty in their shared future by lending small amounts to Mazza that he could apply toward his debt. It took a bit of convincing. “To have to ask for money when I was the provider and had parents who themselves were asking for money, I didn’t want to follow in their footsteps and be taking,” Mazza says. “But that’s not what this was, this was a caring thing.” Mazza and Lambert approached the situation with open communication and specific loan terms. And for them, it’s paying off: Mazza estimates his credit score went up by about 150 points. The couple, who live in Richmond, Virginia, are getting married this year, and they hope to buy a home soon as well. “I had a very, very, very … [Read more...] about In Your Debt: How couples can team up on debt repayment

The West versus the Rest
Twenty-five years ago, Harvard professor Samuel Huntington penned an influential article on the West and the Rest. Building on his 1993 classic “The Clash of Civilizations,” he argued that the West has won the Cold War, but it cannot flourish in a more hostile world until it abandons its universal aspirations. In his mind, the clash is about identities defined by cultural civilizations. He defined eight civilizations: Sinic, Japanese, Hindu, Islamic, Western, Latin American, Orthodox, and African. For him, “the West” refers to broadly Western Christendom, covering Western Europe and North America, including Australasia. Japan is today counted as part of the West, not just being first Asian state to industrialize, but also to emulate Western imperial history. European thinkers have long debated the role of the West in sustaining modernity. America now carries the mantle of leading the West, but much of her intellectual power was boosted by European science and social scientists who … [Read more...] about The West versus the Rest
What Is a Loan Modification? Can It Help Homeowners in Trouble?
Consider a loan modification a lifeline for homeowners in trouble. If you've been hit with financial hardships that hamper your ability to pay the mortgage, there are options other than foreclosure or selling your home . One is to get a loan modification, which is basically an agreement with your lender to change the terms of your loan. Loans can be modified in various ways. For instance, the lender may lower the interest rate; extend the length of the loan; or allow a homeowner to skip payments until he's found a new job, adding those missed payments to the principal to pay later. The terms all depend on the homeowner's specific circumstances, but the goal is ultimately the same: to provide financial relief for homeowners who are struggling to pay their mortgage. So why would lenders agree to take less money? According to mortgage expert Tom Pasqualini of Hudson United, it's a way to keep your business rather than losing you if you refinance with another lender at a lower … [Read more...] about What Is a Loan Modification?
