Miami Dolphins coach Brian Flores says this year’s quarterback competition has been decided, and Josh Rosen is the winner. After supplanting veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick in Week 3, Rosen will start for the third game in a row Sunday against Washington, and the job will remain his going forward, Flores said Wednesday.Rosen ranks 34th in the 32-team NFL in passer rating, completion percentage and touchdown passes. The Dolphins are 0-4, and Rosen has a 3-12 career record as a starter. But the Dolphins want him to play so they can determine whether he might become their franchise quarterback. He was the No. 10 overall draft pick by the Arizona Cardinals in 2018 and started 13 games for them as a rookie. ___More AP NFL: https://apnews.com/NFL and https://twitter.com/AP_NFL___Follow Steven Wine on Twitter: http://twitter.com/Steve_Wine. … [Read more...] about Franchise QB? Redskins appear to have hit rock bottom
This is the 21st season of Dan Snyder’s ownership, and the Redskins seem to have hit rock bottom. The team drafted quarterback Dwayne Haskins in the first round, but fans have little hope. The Redskins haven’t made the playoffs since 2015 and the season-ticket wait list is history. The roster has almost no star power, and coach Jay Gruden will be fired sooner rather than later. “The Patriots have a real problem, because Bill Belichick is known for taking away an opponent’s strength, and he’s got nothing to take away this week,” quipped Frank Herzog, the Redskins’ radio announcer from 1979-2004. “Good luck, Bill. You’ve got your work cut out for you.” The Redskins under Snyder have mostly been known for dysfunction and failure. In 21 years, Snyder has had seven full-time head coaches, four first-round quarterbacks, and only five playoff appearances. The Redskins’ .429 winning percentage in Snyder’s 21 years is … [Read more...] about Redskins appear to have hit rock bottom
Week 5 review: Chiefs are starting to show some cracks
But they are suddenly showing some cracks. The Chiefs’ 19-13 loss to the Colts Sunday night was their first of the season, and their injury situation is getting serious. The Chiefs don’t look quite so dominant right now, which is where we begin our Week 5 review: ■ The Chiefs didn’t skip much of a beat when Tyreek Hill suffered a clavicle injury in Week 1, winning their first four games and averaging nearly 34 points per game. But now the injuries are starting to pile up. Sammy Watkins, who has been terrific this year filling in for Hill, played just two snaps Sunday night because of a hamstring injury. And Mahomes suffered a scary ankle injury that didn’t force him from the game but clearly affected him. Mahomes still threw for his 321 yards, but he had just one touchdown pass, and the Chiefs snapped their streak of 25 consecutive games of scoring at least 25 points. And the Chiefs still have a lot of problems on defense, even after … [Read more...] about Week 5 review: Chiefs are starting to show some cracks
There seems to be something different about this year’s Texans
But there’s something different about the 2019 Texans, who improved to 4-2 with a 31-24 win at Kansas City Sunday. That Patriots-Chiefs rematch in the AFC Championship game most of us are hoping for? The Texans look like they could spoil those plans. Their big statement win is where we begin the Week 6 review: ■ The problem with the Texans since their inception has been that they haven’t been able to find a quarterback. Matt Schaub had a few good years, but it has mostly been an inept bunch led by David Carr, Brock Osweiler, and Tom Savage. The Texans sure have a franchise quarterback now, though. Deshaun Watson is in the early conversation for 2019 MVP, with 12 touchdown passes, three interceptions, a 107.9 passer rating, and five rushing touchdowns. A torn ACL in 2017 ended that season and slowed Watson’s development last year. But he had a healthy 2019 offseason, and the Texans are rolling this year, winning four of their last five games. The … [Read more...] about There seems to be something different about this year’s Texans
Preseason darlings have turned back into the Browns
Their 2-3 record entering Sunday’s home game against the Seahawks is bad enough. But they were embarrassed on national TV last week, looking disorganized and feckless in a 31-3 loss to the 49ers. “To say we didn’t play well Monday night is an understatement,” defensive coordinator Steve Wilks said. “Very embarrassing the way the defense performed, and I take full blame and responsibility for that.” The Browns’ defense certainly played poorly in San Francisco, and is ranked 21st in points allowed (24.4 per game). But the offense looks dysfunctional under first-time head coach Freddie Kitchens. Mayfield has just four touchdown passes against eight interceptions this year, his 55.9 completion percentage ranks 33rd out of 34 qualifying quarterbacks, and his 68.5 passer rating ranks 32nd. And Beckham has been shockingly quiet, with 23 catches for 335 yards and just one touchdown. Beckham has had a career-low two catches in each of his last … [Read more...] about Preseason darlings have turned back into the Browns
