ST. PAUL, Minn. - Last September, the Colorado College Tigers were picked to finish dead last in their conference by a wide margin, and National Collegiate Hockey Conference media day involved telling some of the voters who put them there that it wasn’t as bad as all that.Denver, meanwhile, had the glow of a defending champion, discussing the pieces still in place for another strong campaign. This year had a different vibe.Colorado College lost no one to graduation and returns a high-scoring junior class of eight. Twenty of Denver’s 27 players are underclassmen — though several are NHL draft picks — and there are two seniors left, plus a graduate transfer. They lost major contributors at every position to graduation or the pros, including coach Jim Montgomery. Promoted longtime assistant coach and DU alum David Carle, 28, sounded used to fielding questions about keeping up the school’s standards.“Our team, my youth, whatever people want to … [Read more...] about A year has made world of difference for hockey rivals Colorado College, Denver

Chris Solari Detroit Free Press Published 7:59 p.m. UTC Aug 18, 2018 EAST LANSING — Mike Tressel isn’t thinking about Michigan State’s defensive greatness from 2012 or 2013. The Spartans don’t care about the disaster of 2016, either. “We’re not thinking about anything prior to last year,” MSU’s new defensive coordinator said. “Last year was big for us, there’s no doubt about it. It was big for our guys to overcome and succeed. And now, we’re moving past that.” That is specifically what 12th-ranked MSU’s defense did in 2017, finishing seventh in the country in total defense and serving as the dominant and driving force behind a turnaround season that put the program back on track. And the Spartans did it as one of the youngest groups in Mark Dantonio’s tenure. “I think it’s very good that we have a lot of experience under our belts,” said junior safety David Dowell, a returning … [Read more...] about Experienced Michigan State defense focused on becoming nation’s best

Tony Paul The Detroit News Published 10:58 p.m. UTC Aug 3, 2018 You can safely surmise that new Detroit Mercy men's basketball coach Mike Davis didn't have total authority when putting together the Titans' 2018 nonconference schedule. After all, the Titans have home games — and Davis much prefers road games, to toughen up his teams as it enters the gauntlet of conference play. Last season at Texas Southern, Davis' team opened with 13 games on the road, lost them all, but eventually won the SWAC tournament and made the NCAA Tournament. Detroit Mercy released its nonconference slate Friday, and its heavy on old Horizon League rivals such as Butler, Dayton and Xavier. The Titans open with four road games, at Western Michigan, Temple, Butler and California, the Temple and California games part of the Legends Classic. Detroit Mercy then returns home for two games in the Legends Classic, against Loyola-Maryland and then either a consolation or championship game.
